Cobbled up a hay cradle this afternoon out of warehouse shelving I got my hands on

It got heavy real quick and the feet have tabs on the bottom that dig into the dirt. I don't think the cows will moving this one too much

If it were me, I would drop the two added braces to the ground and use them for skids so you could move the feeder to get away drom the shyte also I would add cross braces to the front and rear bottom to prevent damage when the cattle are leaning into the feeder to get their hay. Other than that I think you did a great job, but what do I know?

I'm with Kerley, it looks like it will hold a bale good, but after feeding for a while in the same spot you will have a big mess.

Yes, a horizontal brace on each end will add stability.

looks good. i would round off or cut off the sharp corners so that in case they get shoving or acting stupid no one gets hurt.

I would weld a pipe about an inch larger in diameter than you hay spear in bottom of the V in the center so it could be easily picked up with a tractor. I would also weld skids that run from post to post. If you can't pick it up completely you can pick it up enough to push it across the ground with out the legs digging in.

Just got done putting the braces on and put a roll in it. Works great. There's even room for one more roll of if i push the first one to the end of the cradle. Movin it isn't an issue. I have forks on the tractor that lift it just fine

CB had some pictures of a hay cradle he built a few years ago. Been looking but can't find. I am going to pattern mine after his but this one looks good, Hook. Nice work.

I have to agree. I can picture a bull walking right up to that thing, throwing it and the bail thru the air. It needs two 4" skids under it to even have a fighting chance.

A bull can crumple solid steel. But these shelving units are twice the wall thickness of any commercial hay ring I've seen. I'd bet the weight is 400 lbs now.
So far it's holding 2 4x5 Bermuda bails and hasn't been moved one inch since placement.
I hope you guys are wrong but if not it was only scape to begin with

With any thing the bulls can get their head under and lift on... they will try.

I had a bull get under our 3 bale trailer last weak. It had one bale and he started pushing around on it. Ended up just pushing the trailer around. :shock: It was behind my new dodge and I almost $%!&. Didn't know wether to chace the bull off or jump in the truck and drive off. :)
