Saturday at an auction i bought a Remington 722 in 222 magnum. Kinda rare to find in good condition.
All guns sold in the auction were sent to a local gun shop to be checked out legally. Went today to pick it up and it took 2 hours. Its not like i am a questionable person. In 2 years i have gotten 2 jobs that require fingerprinting and extensive background check. I have had a conceal carry permit for probably 20 years.
I got so irritated because of it. From this point forward i will not be buying any guns where i need a background check. Except for the fact of this one being fairly rare i would not have bought it.
Just needed to vent. Happy to own it now.

The background check is almost instantaneous these days, just minutes at most. Its even faster when you use your conceal carry license. Did the shop have connection issues? There had to be something going on.

Its all federal but each state has different rules.
In Virginia i think it goes through the State Police. They dont even note your conceal carry number. Its all according to how busy the system is.
In Ky if you have a conceal carry they only fill out the form with that number.
In TN they also run the serial number of the gun.

I refuse to buy from chains stores like Cabelas, Bass Pro, etc for that reason. Most of my guns were individual to individual. Another chunk were bought online and shipped to my FFL guy. The few I bought from actual stores really tested my patience.
In Virginia about 4 years ago a governor decided it should be illegal to purchase person to person. It all has to go through an FFL just like i had bought it from you in TX. Over the years i have bought a few from Cattle Today members and had them shipped to an FFL here.

P2P is the only way anymore. I just know they're compiling a list. 😆

Last time I tried they had some reason to turn me down. I had my CC at the time too. Shouldn't have to ask for permission anyways
If you have been turned down you need to find out why and fix it. Its actually a felony to get turned down and apply again.

I guarantee it. My brother and I got flagged. They aren't suppose to save purchases but they can run numbers and document what was in your possession.

My brother and I got stopped where hw21 meets 77 coming from College Station. I don't remember the numbers but a dps officer ran numbers for 45 min before he gave up. 😄 He thought he was going to make the paper and get a medal. His partner figured it out about 5 min in and was real cool. We just BSed with him until the other guy gave up. He was a gun guy too.

Guess it's good that I didn't try again. I let CC expire too. I'm not interested in playing their game, just to be honest.

My dad fusses at me all the time over it. I'm very stubborn sometimes, especially with my rights when they're dancing on them

How would I go about finding out what the problem was? Local PD?

I would start with the local. Could have been just a misread number. If you still have your CC take it with you even if its expired.

Maybe Christmas time has them slowed up on approval times.

When they come for your guns some list isn't gonna mean a thing. I suggest a concrete vault 6' underground.

In Michigan all guns purchased thru an FFL trigger a background check now which usually only takes minutes. Used to be with a CC permit you didn't need a background check.

Private sale long guns don't require anything. Handguns require a purchase permit which requires a background check.

I prefer private sale whenever possible.

Illinois is the same way

New guns aren't a lot of help, but I've considered getting my FFL type 3 before for curos and relics. It's for guns on the list that are 50 plus year old. A lot guns that I like.

They can ship directly to your house. Just have to keep a log book I believe.

Most of the guns i have are 50+ years old. The Remington 722 i picked up today was made between 1948 and 1961 i think. Im hoping the serial number shows 1957, the year i was born.

We no longer have to have a concealed carry permit in KY.
I don’t know what the process is, but we were in Rural King this morning and the clerk said if we ordered a gun it would be shipped to whatever RK store we wanted and then we’d have to do whatever paperwork when picking it up. Didn’t talk like there was much to the process.
I thought they used to have a waiting period.

You are correct but with the conceal carry in Ky the paperwork is even less.

As you know two of the biggest open gun trades in the east are near you. 1000 people a day sometimes. But in the last few years trade guns in general are as high or higher than what you can buy from Rural King or another good FFL.
