I have a Lincoln g9 250 probably that backfires whenever I strike up now. Anyone have any idea what might cause this?

I don't recognize the model number but I am assuming it is a gasoline powered welder. The short answer is the carb probably needs to be cleaned and rebuilt. The long answer is any gas engine has a hard time transitioning from idle to some higher RPM. During that period of time the fuel/air mixture needs to be pretty rich otherwise it will back fire. That is the purpose of the accelerator pump in carbureted engines.
