Asphalt

I have some really bad roads I have to use the dozer on each year to make it driveable or the motor grader and wondered if I just hauled regular asphalt in and used the roller to go over it after I dumped it if that would hold together or do I have to have that machine that forms it? I just wanted to tail gate it and run over it to press it I have a area thats almost a mile long and it would be way cheaper to do that. I have gravel but it washes out and then its loud as He.. when i drive in there to hunt in the morning and the complete rd is 3 miles long but about 1 mile is really messed up. I wonder if I should just put in # 3 and call it a day or try the asphalt what do yall think?

I wouldn't, but yes it will work, we have done a lot of it that way, just dumped out of the truck graded and packed it works ok. But I would go with the 0 to 3.

Thanks Denver I was afraid of that it's super noisy on gravel though that's only reason I wanted asphalt

Crush and run . It's like limestone gravel that packs well

Too light washes out even 57 washes it sucks the 3's stay mostly

Got any iron ore around? Messy the first rain, but after that, the particles rust together. All our county farm roads are paved with it. Light traffic it's great--heavy trafic, it washboards and they have to grade it.

skyhigh, you do not need a paving machine, all it really does is control the depth and how wide the a/c mix is applied. grade and pack the road base (the better the compaction, the longer the life of the a/c) spray a prime coat (this holds the a/c together, do not skip), spread your mix, roll, and your good to go. good luck with what ever you do.

We only have a iron recycling plant that has some rocks they call slag they sell for 4.00 a ton that are #3 in which if I have to use #3 i will use those. Do your rocks have tiny pourous holes in them?

No holes, just little irregularly shaped red "rocks", with mostly sharp edges. They dig them from a pit a few miles from me. Iron ore is a mix of these rocks and red sand. The sand is eroded down iron ore rocks. I have some iron ore on my place, but not much. I am familiar with iron slag from smelters tho--we call them "clinkers" here.

I have to say Sky, that I'm a little dismayed and disappointed with this thread and your hay post in grasses and pasture section. I thought Native American Indians could sneak right up on a deer without being seen, heard, or smelled, and that they could tell what the weather was going to do by just holding a finger up to the wind. Have I been mis-informed?

grey I am sorry for letting you down I will work harder on living up to the Native American expectations lol I think my problem with the sneaking up on the deer is im too fat and not as stealth as I was when I was 21 Deer tend to be a lil spooked by a huge tree looking thing moving in the woods just my opinion lol I can however remain silent and not be smelled though lol Ahhh... as far as the weather goes I was holding a finger to the wind but it wasn't the appropriate finger which caused the rain shower to come within 5 mins of my obscene middle finger gesture to mother nature lol I am practicing doing a rain dance in reverse maybe I will post it on you tube for you lol

Hasn't been too long ago that asphalt was dang near as high as concrete. Glad I'm not paving a mile.

How about a layer or 2 of chip and seal, then broom the loose gravel off.

Yes, cheaper than asphalt, but closer to what you want.
