ANYONE A BEEF SHOWMANSHIP EXPERT??

I have recently been getting annoyed with this guy who has been winning showmanship everywhere he sets foot...I am bound and determined to beat him...so if any of you guys have any tips for beef showmanship, please tell me...or any questions that stumped you along the way that you could share with me so i wont miss them...just anything really..

some basic tips:

- be comfortable
- be confident (not arrogant) in the ring
- know your animal (everything about it)
- leave plenty of space
- big turns when you have to make a circle
- keep an eye on the judge, an eye on your animal, and an eye on the animal in front of and behind you
- always make right turns
- have good posture, stand up straight, you dont want your animals slouching so you shouldnt either

just a few i thought of right off the top of my head. sure i, and others, will come up with many more. plus you can do a search on the show boards and find a lot of great information on showmanship.

Expert? Certainly not me. But those who claim to be will not likely run up and tell you they are. They will do so silently and let their deeds speak for themselves.

Something I wrote just a day or so ago needs to be repeated here.

As for judging - everyone has a different eye for art. Some folks think the Mona Lisa is a beautiful painting of a beautiful woman. To me it is a plain painting of a plain woman.

If there are no hard and fast - "MEASUREABLE" standards - then one is always subject to the whim of the judge - plain and simple.

One does not have to agree with the judge - one simply must accept the decision of the judge and do so with grace.

No matter what the determination, you have no control over the judge - s/he will do as s/he sees fit - so relax and enjoy.

The wheel will come round to you in good time. Attempting to force it there may actually slow it down.

How, in your opinion, should a person stand?..i know the whole back straight stuff like where at around the heifer??

Always stand out of the way so that the judge can see your heifer. Never block his view of your heifer. When the judge is looking at your heifer make sure you maintain good eye contact and don't over smile. Also if he pulls the calf in front of you out always move up never leave an empty space and don't get so close to the calf in front of you that bump into it. One of the most important things in showmanship is to never quit showing your calf. Some judges will move you around and make you think that you are coming in last but they are looking to see if you continue showing you calf. To many times I have seen kids get that disappointed look and quit showing and then they don't win. The first time my daughter won showmanship the judge did this and she never stopped and he said that was what put her over the other kids. Good Luck

Keep showing is a big item. Use the whole ring. Be confident and have fun. Know your animal! Watch the earlier showmanship classes and check out what that judge is looking for. Little differences can make a huge difference in selection. Have someone video you showing and the other individual showing and then do a comparsion. Good Luck!

I know excatly what you mean... there is this boy that wins every show no matter what... here are some things

-stop your cow in place, like so you don't have to move the feet.
-move around to the front of the cow when the judge moves to the side thatyour on.
-set the feet up square and fast.
-teach your cow to stand still for 5+ mintues
-Pratice makes perfect.

As for Questions;

-frame score size
-weight
-sire name and tag number
-dam name and tag number
-if bred, who is she bred to?
-what is she bred to that bull for?
-how far into gestation is she?
-what is her due date?
-how old
-age to the day
-birthdate
-regestered name
-how did you learn to show?
-how long have you been showing?
-what breed is it?
-learn the body parts
-how many days in a gestation period
-normal tempture
- how ofton does a go into heat
-what are your cows feeding habits.
-what percent fat do you feed your cows?
-how do you groom a cow?
-were are the ___name a body part___ on your cow?
-what breed is the most common in the usa?
-how do you a.i a cow?
-name the reproduction tract in a cow
-names the reproductive tract in a bull
-what is marbling?
-what would change about your animal?*use good terms*

i few judges will trick you and ask question like : how many times does a cow go into heat when she is bred? answer = never..........so think about hard questions like that write them down and learn them...good luck!!!!!!

Lots of good advice in the posts above, but the most important thing to remember is: Showmanship is Won, or Lost at home. A top notch Showmanship Judge will pay close attention to the calf; how good has it been fed, groomed, fit for show, etc. Such a Judge will remember who dragged and stuck their calf to perfection during the Show competition. Most judges will have narrowed the Showmanship field down to only a few during the Classes, Breed, and Grand selections. The Winners are normally those who do in the ring exactly the same as they do every day, at home.

One Point not previously mentioned: Every calf walks and shows best at a certain speed. At home, determine that gate, and practice, practice, practice every day, so that your calf will walk at that same gate each and every time you move it around the ring.

one big do not is fidgit. At Houston I saw a girl showing she was constantly moving, she would loin her heifer 2x scratch her belly 2x then move foward and rub her neck 2x and then move back and start over again. It was uneccesary to be moving that much anf it was distracting

i am by no means a profesional shower but i have been showing for 8 years now but; i was always taught to use my show halter at home when practicing and it dose help. but a trick that will help you is use the ring in your showhalter as a guide. if you want her to move her foot forward pull the chain to the front of the ring and to move her foot back push the chain to the back of the ring and of course use your show stick while doing this. that helps out for a speedy set up.

My favourite is to ask a kid leading a steer 'How old is your heifer?' or 'Is your animal in calf?' :lol: Funny how many of them tell me their steer is three or four months in calf.

This is a great tip. Utilizing the halter to adjust the feet is a great way to make the process of setting up your animal more comfortable, smooth and seemless. I've been taught that and teaching that for years. not enough people showing do that and wonder why they can't get their animals just right. It does help in getting that foot in just the right spot too... more pressure = farther the foot movies, just a lil pressure on the lead = the foot moves just a little bit.

One thing that I have found is a misconception is moving when the judge is walking around you. Whether you are in a side-by-side line-up or a profile view. Most of the time the individuals on the lead rope want to get way out in front of the animal when the judge is on their right side and way off to the side when the judge is on their left side. I was told by a very prominent showmanship judge many years ago that when a judge is walking down the line and you need to move, only take one side-step out of the way and then move right back into place. No need to get way out of the way and into an awkward position. Either way the judge is coming towards your or either line-up you are in, one side-step is more than sufficient, and is not too much movement that might cause a disturbance to an animal. Since I was told that I started doing just that and observed other showmen to see what they did. I started placing at the top of the class more consistently and noticed most showmen at the top of the showmanship classes did the same or very similar.

Just a tip that I learned and has helped me. Hope it helps some.

I especially liked the one that had the questions that a judge would possibly ask a showman...but they all helped..a whole bunch...but at the last show I received 3rd and thats better than I have been doing(this being my first year in sr. showmanship)I have been pretty nervous..but I'm getting a whole lot more relaxed now..my main competition wasn't there but there was another girl who is awesome at showing...I know this is kinda bad...but I went in behind her and did almost everything she did...she got 2nd...but thanks a whole bunch for these tips and keep em coming, you guys will have me a pro before too long!!
