Beginner question: Is there any sense in thinking about buying steer calves (maybe 10 or so) and growing them out for sale at the auction? Or is the problem one of buying them low enough to weather any dire dip in the market? Seems like it's awful expensive to get into the cow/calf area around here..and looks like the auction cattle are poor looking. Trying to get started but want to be smart about this..

It makes as much sense as anything else in the livestock enterprise area. If you have the ress to winter over the steers and thewinters are mild enough that you won't have to supplement it would be a good "educational" way to get started. Don't expect to make a lot of money, the margins in any part the cattle business is pretty thin.
