I don't follow the news much, so not familiar with "clown sightings", but my wife is a clown. She does balloon animals, face painting, etc. She runs into people that are afraid of her occasionally, both children and adults. With children, she will ignore them and not try to crowd them. She says that they usually get over it pretty quick. With older people, it seems kind of silly to me. She says it's often teenage girls that just seem to enjoy the drama.

Clown are ok by me.
I always welcomed those guys with painted faces and big britches when I was down in the dirt and a bad bull had his mind on hooking me or stomping on me.

There was a 16 year old who was stabbed to death by one of these clowns. And lots of other reports of kids being persuaded to follow them into woods and stuff. Police now want us to "take pictures of the clowns so we can try ID them". I'm telling u if there's a clown trying to lead kids into the woods he would get more than just his picture taken.
