I’ve always used the green stuff but when my daughters Jeep came out of the shop for leaking water tank it had the yellow in it. Tester says it will go down to -50. The green stuff only goes to-30. Is the yellow stuff really better and can it be mixed with other colors? What is it’s useful life? Is it good for several years or does it turn to sand like the pink stuff does after a few years?

Can't say as I've never tasted either one :hide: :) :)
Seriously,I think the yellow is supposed to be better or,at least,compatible with more types of systems.
Hopefully someone can give you a good answer.I'd like to know too.
 
Color alone is not indicative of the freezing point.

What's important is to never mix them, unless it says specifically that it's intended for all makes and models. Even then, best to err on the side of caution. Some of that stuff turns into meat sauce when mixed, and is a real SOB to get cleaned out.

I don't trust those floating ball testers anymore either, after having coolant that tested good freeze into solid ice, so hard that it pushed the hoses off of the radiator.

If it has yellow now, put yellow back in, being careful about keeping a 50/50 mix as you top off. Do not use tap water either, go spend a couple dollars on distilled water at the grocery store, or just buy the premixed stuff.
 
I also believe you want to be careful with the ball type testers. 50-50 is the maximum water to antifreeze ratio, after that you start going backwards. Straight antifreeze will freeze somewhere in the neighbourhood of -25C or something like that. The problem is that the ball type testers are measuring specific gravity, and antifreeze has a higher specific gravity than water. So once your tester is reading a freeze point of colder than -40 it probably has too much antifreeze in it and you are actually going backwards. My numbers may be off but I'm fairly certain of the theory lol
