I can buy Jersey steers around here pretty cheap. I have heard that their meat is actually pretty good. I have been raising a Limousin steer for slaughter but wonder if it might be better to buy a Jersey steer for slaughter and sell the Limo steer when he gets to be 800 lbs. or so. My family consumes about 1/2 of a normal Limo or Angus steer in one year so a whole Jersey steer should be plenty. Has anyone experienced eating the Jersey beef and how will it compare to the Angus or Limo when it comes to palatability? Thanks

one of my friends in college grew up on a jersey dairy. he always had some jersey steaks in the freezer and they were excellent in my opinion. very tender. i think they would be better than limousin. you may have to feed the jersey more, but you can probably sell the limousin and buy a jersey and put some money in the bank.

beefy is right. had a neighbor with jersey dairy & he sold most of his cull as freezer beef. an old butcher claimed jersey was some of the best meat, but people wouldn't buy it b/c it has yellow fat

the reason the packers disscount dairy steers is b/c they are lean than beef breeds an they feel the dairy steers are no good culls but as stated they eat just as well maybe better over the yrs ive butchered 3 holstein bulls they was tender as any meat around scott

We always raised or bought a Jersey or Jersey cross steer for the freezer. It's excellent beef, very tender. There's still several folks around here that raise them and advertize them for beef. It may take a little longer to get them where you want them to be size and weight wise but you'll like the beef.

Hoss,
I have a 10 day old Jersey bull calf I need to get rid of desperately bad. Make you a good deal on him. I'm in NW Alabama.

JT, I can buy Jersey bull calves around here right off the farm for 40 bucks. Even if yours was free it would cost me that in gas just to pick him up. Take him to the sale barn. Bottle feeders are going allot higher there.
