Another ethanol stink abrewing

I thought ethanol was supposed to be cheaper and more efficient than gas. Looks lick we keep pouring money into the hole and watch the flames.
 
Ethanol production from corn is pretty much a joke. There are many other products that are much more efficient in producing ethanol (switchgrass and slime come to mind).

Somewhere up the food chain, the fine boys and girls in congress that were passing out money had their funds invested in low priced corn.......

As always, follow the money.
 
I'm glad I'm not the only person who thinks ethanol made from corn is a disaster waiting to happen. In the production of ethanol from corn it takes 1 unit of petroleum to make only 1.5 units of ethanol. Plus it takes thousands of gallons of water, when a facility is in the planning stage that is one of the biggest factors determining the plants location, how much ground water they can get. Now they are talking of making ethanol from corn field "trash". I've heard that this type of cellulosic ethanol will actually take $70 per acre of fertilizer off of the field that the producer will have to reapply with petroleum based fertilizers in the spring.
I just heard this morning on the radio on the way to work that Vera Sun, based in Brookings, SD, is rumored to be talking of filing Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Is this the beginning of the end?
 
I think the whole thing is a ruse. Look at the idea of making ethanol from forest biomas. Fantastic idea since the whacko environmentalists have all but shut down our paper industry in this country. What a wonderful alternative. Energy from trees. Might inspire people to reforest their cutover woodlands because there will be value in the trees. However, this has also been Washingtonized by the environmental whackos yet again. If you read the bill very closely you will find that any wood ethanol plants getting government help will have to use forest biomass. Look biomass up in any textbook or dictionary and it will explain what this is. However, congress - in their infinite fing wisdom - decided to redefine biomass under pressure from the whacko environmentalists to redifine it is any plant material that is not suitable or capable of becoming a more valuable product. :shock: So please explain to me what these mulitmillion dollar tax subsidized ethanol mills are going to run on if you can't use trees?

Sad but so true. I am a corn/beans farmer as well as a cattleman. I don't know if ethanol is good/bad/indifferent. I hear so many arguements both ways. What one person says is fact, the other will say is false and vice versa.

All I know is, there has to be a better way to be more independent from foreign oil. It takes fuel to grow and harvest the corn, fuel to haul it, fuel to make it, and fuel to deliver it. It may be a positive energy balance after all of that, but there has to be a more effecient way.

As a banker, I have the chance to look at some financials for an ethanol plant. They wouldn't be making any money at all without the goverment subsidies, and would be losing quite a bit.

Umm, I think we're there
 
If you recall, this is not the first time the ethanol craze has gone through the pipes. Ethanol plant in Georgia is using a lot of the tanks and such from the plant that was built during the last craze. Like the first one, I'm sure there will be some people who will get well on it and many hopeful investors who will lose some money on it. If we can't learn from history and make improvements based on past mistakes is this not a sign of madness?

I'm all for alternative energy. But until we as a nation decide whether the snail darter, the flatwoods salamander or the view from the beach is less important than energy independance - I think we will continue to be slaves to others.
