About 7 miles from me, last night someone drove off the highway, across a fresh cut alfalfa field, across a mature soybean field (in front of the combine parked yesterday to being combining today), cut two fences to drive across two pastures, backed up to the corrals and loaded 20 yearlings, and drove out the same way. Amazingly brave, but I am sure they had spotters and a whole lot of surveillance to lead up to this theft.
 
Make sure your animals are branded, its a discouragement for sticky fingers.
That said, we have had problems in our parts for several years of someone "dropping' a cow or two and they only take a hind quarter or two and leave the rest for the coyotes and bears.
I tend to think it is someone- somewhat local, as they know where hidden pastures are, that 70% of local people don"t know exist, and how to get in and out of them.
What is surprising is that there are no rumors that I have heard around as to who it may be, and this is such a small community everyone knows the business of everyone else, and this has been going on for several years.
Hope they slip up someday and get caught by a real cranky farmer, as the laws are too lax on people like this in general, and probably won"t do much, but a cranky farmer might...

Pilgrim appeals Moffat County cattle rustling conviction
Earlier this month Monty Luke Pilgrim, 52, of Little Snake River, was expected to report to the Moffat County Public Safety Center to begin serving his 90-day jail sentence.
Pilgrim was charged in district court with nine counts of theft of agricultural animals, a Class 4 felony; nine counts of concealing strays, a Class 6 felony; and nine counts of wrongful branding, a Class 6 felony.

Not that I am defending this guy, but he got a bit more than JUST 90 days; look at the fines! The cows were not that valuable I am sure!!!
"Senior Judge David Lass presided over the trial and handed down the sentence in September, which — in addition to the 90-day jail sentence — also included three years of probation, 50 hours of useful community service per each year of probation, and fines and court fees exceeding $15,000."

Why do they dish out fines? What good does that do for the people who lost their animals? Why not FULL restitution to the victims. But if you follow the money then it sure does seem to explain why the courts turn these dead beats back in society so they can do a number on yet another innocent tax payer and get his hand slapped and pay another fine to the court. Pretty lucrative rackett if you ask me.

We had an illegal here that got caught selling drugs. The court confiscated $300,000 of his cash and property and turned him loose. He moved to the next county and some of the drug people killed him, his wife, his housekeeper, his babysitter and their three year old baby. This revolving door policy simply amazes me of course now the libbies have yet another 5 murders they can blame guns on. :bang:
