Going to breed some angus heifers to a salers bull. Does anyone have any of these? If you do could you post some pictures? Everyone talks of salers being crazy but i've been around these bulls and their herd and most these are all calm so I'm not worried about that. Questions,comments, and/or concerns are welcome.

By way what you mean "most of these are all calm"? Does that mean they still has some nutty salers in the herd?
 
I have a few cows that are a salers angus cross and also salers hereford cross. The whole bunch is screwy as a pet coon. The best I can hope for is flight instead of fight. They aren't bad when you're horseback but it's taken them two years to get settled down that far.
That being said, they are my best cows aside from disposition. They go out and push into areas where my straight angus and brangus/brangus don't and they've ALL bred back as soon as I turned the bulls out and they raise good calves.
If I could find salers that were quiet enough to be around I wouldn't hesitate to use more of them but I don't want any more like the ones I have.
 
Im going to sale this first set of calves at weaning weight and then buy a good angus bull to start making my herd larger. Im starting small and building up. I guess the purpose of that was to say I'm not worried about the craziness of the breed I will be getting rid of them before they will become a problem.

if you're breeding heifers you should make sure to breed them to a bull that sires low birth weight calves. check that on the salers bull before you breed to him. might be better off getting a low birth weight angus bull now if the salers throws big calves.

terminal bulls are ones that you breed to when you're selling all the calves, they are typically bigger/thicker, usually don't sire low birth weight calves, so best to breed them to mature cows.
 
I see. Thanks. And the guy I'm renting from has limos and salers and when we were talking about breeding them to heifers I told him I wanted the bull that threw the smallest calves he had and he told me he would have one of his salers ready because his particular salers threw smaller calves than his limos.
 
I have some 9 year old SalerxAngus.Honestly, they're easy keepers and ,of course, mediocre milkers. There's alot of hair but buyers don't seem to mind.
The hair seems to show up in the calves as well. Guy around here cross with Gelbvieh and says it "knocks more of the hair off". :?: I don't know.

I don't see temperment issues but there is some major frame. Heaviest cows I have. I wonder if they make less calf relative to the feed they consume?

This is just an observation I've made over the last few years. Not something I can back up with facts so my :2cents:
 
I buy 2 loads of angus/saler calves from a rancher in eastern oregon most every year. Very nice cattle that gain good and work the country. Plenty trotty though.
