If you had Angus in Florida and wanted to breed for retained heifers that were hardy and heat tolerant, what breeding plan would you follow?

a) stay purebred, selecting for a certain line of hardy/heat tolerant angus bulls? If so, which one/ones?

b) cross with brangus for a bit of kick while keeping the cowherd one main breed type?

c) cross with another brahman influened breed for extra vigor? (like gert, braford, etc) If so, which breed in particular and why?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
 
Yeah, guess that was choice "d" that I didn't list... eventually just sell em all and buy a bunch of brangus or f1s.

i probably wouldnt sell em, if their good stock, and working... id use them as a foundation..
 
yep, they're good stock and working, so plan to use them as foundation. My thought is to breed em to registered brangus (3/8) to slowly introduce the brahman influence. after 2 rounds of brangus I'd be where I want. ...Just wondering what others would have to say. Sounds like you would go full bore and put a brahman bull over them, putting the F1 replacement heifers back with an angus bull. not a bad idea.

thats if i were in Florida,, here i want around 1/4 brahman anymore..although the market is good now where the discounts aint as noticable. there still there
 
I think 1/4 BR is all you really need in a cow in our area anyway. (conditions in alabama & N. central fla are pretty darn close). she might not have the giddy-up of an F1, but its enough IMO. Also, ear/skin should be hardly noticeable in an Angus sired calf out of a 1/4 BR cow.

I found a breeder in the Tampa area that produces F1s & 1/4s but don't want to lay down big money to buy a big bunch of calves during this high market time.
