At least 45 to 60 days is the norm. Gives the cows uterus time to recover.

A cow will cycle 21-30 days post partum, and some will settle on that first heat following calving. Do you want to breed them at that time? No, because it puts too high a demand on the cow and she will burn out at much younger age. Decide when you want your calving season to be, and put the bull in 9 months prior to that time.
