angus breeders... bull question

I was doing a search on the ASA web site, and came across this bull:

TEX AMBUSH 9106, an Angus bull. Now, I usually do not use Angus because we are always trying to breed up (meaning get back to purebred status), but when I saw his EPD profile, it drew my interest. Does any Angus breeders out there know anything about him? Or even Simmental breeders... I would like to see more rump on him, but my Simmi's can add that! He seems super long, and has a long hip. There's quite a bit there to like but for me personally seeing Texierras as one of the owners is a big time selling point. They make cattle that are just at home in the show ring as they are out pounding the mountain and they don't take excuses for failure from either end of things. Riverbend has a pretty similar reputation but focused more on ranch genetics.

Nope. I don't have an angus bull in my tank that doesn't already belong to someone else. :lol: In fact I don't even have anything black in there for my own cows.
I have dealt with cattle that originated from both herds though and they've all been top notch quality. Riverbend is good but the Texierras are fanatical about quality.

With his Angus numbers id think a liitle above average, he has very little accuracy, what he does have came from 50k and Igenity tests. I see no progeny and a 5 yr old bull could have some. Not sure anymore how the Sim numbers change he may work great for SimAngus i think he will add frame.

On the ASA web site, their accuracies are pretty close. TEX bull has 91 calves registered to him and Prophet has 79 calves. Not that it matters, I was just looking at high EPD bulls in the ASA web site and found him. Prophet seems nice too, and is one year older than the TEX bull.
Just pondering.... looking at stuff I do not normally look at (Angus bulls!)... lol

All joking aside, that is a terrible photo. The loin and heart girth look extremely pinched. There is no consistency of depth to the bottom line. It looks like a photoshop job of two different bulls from the shoulders forward. But he is very typical of the "by/buy the numbers" bulls.

His mother does not look like the other two females in the photo. The great grand dam is spectacular. The mother looks like a young steer. Go to my ranchers.net account and you will see a young bull that looks just like her.

He has a terrible rear end on him. He should make a good calf on a heifer but he's weak topped and the farther back you go the worse he gets.

Carcass quality. With Ambush 28 & FD 5321 behind him, he oughta pile on the marbling and ribeye. Tenderness likely to be in the mix, too, as Rock'n D Ambush had all the identified tenderness gene markers, back when GeneStar was the only game in town.
My only concern would be the '2536 effect' - rumors of poor fertility - or, at least, dismal Heifer Pregnancy numbers - associated with descendents of this bull's maternal granddam.
That said, I've looked long & hard at some other AN bulls with 2536 behind 'em - just never pulled the trigger.

Thanks, that is what I was looking for. I can evaluate a picture, but not being familiar with the angus breed as much as the simmental breed, it is stuff like this I need to hear. I doubt I would ever use an angus bull, but I like learning new things and his numbers intrigued me. I always wonder where it comes from (pedigree wise... not data wise).

CP, I think I am familiar with Texierra. We lived in California some time ago.... do they run lots of land over the pass? I think it was the 5 freeway that went through the mountains, and there was lots of acreage where the cattle was ran, or am I thinking of something else? It has been a long time since I was out there.... my memories fade

Tex Ambush has been part of the CMP for several years now and from what I have heard his calves are grading well. Prophet has very few offspring that have made their way thru the system as yet to increase his accuracies --so this is slow.

Any high API / TI lots normally in that sale or just show cattle?

Thanks for the info. I like learning about cattle families, and with his high EPD profile it intrigued me.
The MO sale does not typically have show cattle stuff, but more geared toward the seed stock producer. I would not put one of my show heifers in that sale for fear of her not bringing what I think she is worth. We will have at least three lots consigned, two pairs (one is a recip with a calf) and a spring bred. We usually have lots of good cows in that sale, and since our spring sale was canceled I am hoping we get a large sale put together.
