The checking at all hours part anyways. Curly, our daughters ex-4H cow is due to calve any day. I think she was with the bull to start calving on the 20th, and she is showing really heavy too. The rest of the herd is due for Mar 1, and we have a few of them showing pretty good too.
Last night was -21 C last night, I'm not sure what that is in F but it is below 0, darn cold, and windy too. I checked just before bed time and really didn't think anything was going to happen. But when I woke up at 3:30, I just couldn't get back to sleep, then I heard the wind blowing, so I figured I'd better go out and check. Of course no calves, and no one looked too imminent, but I brought Curly up to the barn just to be on the safe side. She likes it in there anyway, and headed right up the hill. I'm looking at her on TV right now, and no calf, but better safe than sorry, should have been smart and put her there last night at 10 rather than 4 am. Then I wouldn't have had to go out to find her.....
On a little lower note, we have already had 1 calf. By the looks of him he was at least a month premature, dead of course. I don't think he was born alive. So that sucks, but I am hoping for an early set of twins so we can adopt one onto this cow. She has been a fairly good cow up til this, I'd give her another chance if it works out. Calves are rather hard to find right now though, not too many people calving yet.
