Well it was about Heckle, Jeckle, and all of their relatives... But now I feel more like talking about food... Congratulation on the cornbread... Sounds like we have a new Marie Calendar's in the making..

That was the gist of the original thread... Magpies around here are a real pill... They come in and kill the chicken chicks and eat the dog and cat food.... Not to mention cr?pping on everything...
From what I can see, there is no shortage of them. But they are protected here in Montana.. (At least in most of Montana :lol: )

And then again I read too fast too.

But Protected?! What?? :shock: How come?? Magpies don't deserve to be protected!!

I hate those birds, next to pigeons, seem like they'll never shut up, and they make trees look ugly too with their big nests.
They're hard to shoot at because under that big-looking body, there's lots of feathers but they're bodies are small.

They're the worst pests, in my book,along with squirrels and pigeons. :nod:

I don't think many of the southern folks will have had much experience with the feathered rats. I shot alot of them last year haven't really got a chance at to many this year. They are wary birds.

At the risk of getting my head bit off, I have just recently reared a baby magpie. He is very sweet, independant but still comes to talk to us every now and then. He sits on my angora wether's back and snuggles into the mohair. :D

there is also a Country superstition here that if you see a lone, Magpie you will have bad luck all day, so you are supposed to salute it and a little ditty that goes with the salute is 'Good day Mr Magpie, hows your wife and Family' it is supposed to ward of the evil or bad luck coming your way.

We got some around here. Old timers use to say, its a bad farmer if he has lots around means --lots of dead stock around They come and steal the dogs food off the portch.They have a cousin up north called the whiskey jack-If your up there and light a fire they'll show up,they can be tamed and eat out of your hands in a couple hours I guess they never seen man and have no reason to fear them, but they can be a real nusiance if your too friendly to them IE trying to work and these damn birds landing on your head

The plague of the porch...darn things don't even have the sense to fly south. Drive the dogs crazy.
Nothing like a teenage boy with a pellet gun....oh my, I didn't say that they could be protected over here too.
They do clean up the slaughter pen though.

yes the magpies are black and white here, they steal things that shine, they take the tops off of milk bottles and peck at the milk, can't leave coins around near an open window or they steal thoses too.

With hunting season on, take your boned out deer/elk carcuss outside within shotgun range of your front door... Line up the spinal column of the animal with your shotgun's barrel when protruding ever so slightly from your front door...
The following will keep all of the Magpie's (MP) within the shot pattern, tighten up on your KZ, and is cost effective when consdiering the ratios of birds killed to shotshells expended!
After the shot, do rush out as many survivors will usually come back immediately to see why some of their buddies are still hanging around... This will usually yield yet another shot...
One last thing, to try is to line up all of the MP bodies along the spinal column of the animal and use them as decoys... Other MP's will think that their in line at "Home Town Buffet"
Careful though as their are a few side effects... One of Murphy's Laws states, "As the MP flock builds in numbers along the carcuss and the excitement, of "Ok... Just one more and I pull the trigger", hightens, the family cat will usually show up too! And one last item of caution would be to tell your spouse of your plan "Before" you pull the trigger...

Don't have magpies here, but we do have a lot of starlings. They make a huge mass out of the insulation in the barns. They are like rats with wings.
