Ancestors

The search shows that it’s been quite a few years since this topic has been discussed.
Looking at those old photographs the other day I decided I needed to work on my family tree again. It has been about 3 years and we have been discussing some of our ancestors at coffee shop each week.
My parents are not getting any younger and I want to give them a family tree framed this year for Christmas.
While I have been delighted and fascinated at my findings (I am a novice at this) I found a will from my 4th great grandfather. Ironically I have no leads from there and it seems like the end of the line. But the will has had an effect on me because of some of the things he passed on to his family. I would post it but I do not want to be insenstive to anyone here. It has really made me look at a few things differently.

His son however was captured in Florida during the civil war and Died in prison in New York in 1864.
Do any of you research your trees?

been doing that very thing, and have found that im kin to half of this town, even customers that i wouldnt have known from Adam otherwise

I'm afraid to....My family "Tree" would look more like a cane fishing pole. :nod:

Fort Payne Al. was named after my acestors on my maternal granddads side... Asa F Payne my maternal GGG grandpaw was a sergeant in the 24th GA.. though it reads sergeant colonel on his tombstone...

Got one Grandpa's line back to Scotland and both Grandma's back to Scotland or Ireland.
The original family farm is in Wolf's Den Maryland settled there in the 1600's and started migrating south.
Can't get the other Grandpa out of Mississippi.

good picture,, you might be kin to sporder then.. he lives there :cowboy: supposed to be getting a picture of my maternal ggg grandpaw from kin, in west AL.. before long.you know whats sad is there is a old spinning wheel he built less than 100 yds. from where im sitting right now, that i never would have seen or known about. until i started searching

Had a relative I had nover heard of that did the genology on the mothers side. Went back to france and then a bunch of indians from the Indian Territory of Wisconsin. On my dads side there isn;t anything from before my grandfather emigrated from Norway.

One of the cousins tracked the family tree back into the late 1400's in Finland or Sweden. One of those old timers was listed in an old bible they found in the local church, it say his name (I can't remember it), had 6 cows and 4 children. Cows listed first...... I guess having cows runs in the family. A couple of them are listed along with the amount of land they owned.

My cow partner goes back to one of the ship captains who sailed along with Columbus.

Not hard to trace mine. Been stuck in the same township for 9 generation. Before that Ohio on my Dad's side, and Kentuc on my Mom's side. Both sides ended up in North America in 1670, one county apart from each other in Virginia. Go further back they came from Scotland, and England. Go even further back, and you come to the source of the my family's name in the Village of Mathenay, France in the Jura region. My Mother's clan formed in Scotland so that's where the trail ends for that.
Throw in the Revolutionair, 1812, Black Hawk, Mexican American, Spanish American, WWI, WWII, Korean, and Nam wars in there and you have the full history.

This is a link to the tail end of my family tree, it traces back to original Wentworth in 1066 a.d. who is my 29th great grandfather on my dads side.

My family had our family tree researched and had a book made with our family crest on the front of it.
They were real proud of it and was showing everyone, my cousin saw it and it has a rooster on the crest
He said why hell look at that fighting rooster on the crest we must be Mexican, my grandparents were not amused

The Indian Territory of Wsiconsin is funny, but "Madeline Island, French Louisiana (Wisconsin), New France" strikes me as hilarious. And that was only back in 1630.
Maybe that's why I like Zydeco music, I'm part Cajun

While I was doing my family tree, I thought I would do my Husbands and found one of his cousins who put us onto his half brother in Louisiana, we made a trip over a few years ago and things did not end well, with the brother, but still talk to cousins and the one who is on here that got me onto this site.

With my parents being morman they have researched it quite a bit. My gggg uncle signed the Declaration of Independence. Josiah Bartlett. My ggg grandma was 100% Cherokee blood and walked the trail of tears to Oklahoma. Supposedly we're related to sir William Wallace ( brave heart) and also have enough royal blood in me that if a bunch of people died I would be king of somewhere.

It would have to be a heck of a lot of people, cuz, as I've said before William is one of my 5th or so Great Uncles, he was a Scottish Laird, which is a Lord in England. William never married so there were no legitimate children, it is his brother John's line I come from.

Maybe it's his brother then. I don't know. Just what I was told a while back. It doesn't make much of a difference to me besides a story. Now the Josiah Bartlett being a ggg uncle, that ill brag on with some certainty.
Also, a relative on my mothers side was pretty high up in the confederacy but don't know Those details. I was offered a full scholarship to school based on grades and that.

My 7th or 8th was the appointed governor of Maryland.
He died in 1720 his home in Annapolis, was the subject of an archeological dig in the l980s and early 1990s. The results of the dig, along with much other research, were published in 1994 by Anne Elizabeth Yentsch in her book A Chesapeake Family and their Slaves.

my mothers side of the family was traced back to a first cousin of William the Conqueror who fought at Hastings in 1066, was granted a good chunk of land in the northwest of England and like all families managed to piss it all away long before my mom showed up! My son is very intrigued by history and his goal is to be at the millenial celebration of the battle of Hastings in 2066, he'll be 69 years old by then, I hope he makes it, I doubt I will :)
