I am planning to purchase a new 7' X 24" aluminum stock trailer. I currently own a Featherlite and have seen Wilson and Merrit trailers. I would be interested in comments on any of these (or others).
 
I have an Exiss. Both the Featherlight and the Exiss is made by Universal Trailers. All the frame work is the same. They skin them differently is all. Both have 10 on center cross beams.

I have never heard of the two you referred to.
 
The Merritt trailers appear to be the best built of all the aluminums on the market. You can get 6 inch centres on the crossbeams, and I think, with our roads in Saskatchewan, you'd want it.

Don't know anything about Wilson or Merrit, but I've got a Featherlite and my father has an Eby. My qualms with the FL is the inside rear slider and the fact it makes more noise than a herd of buffalo in a glass factory. The old man's Eby is quieter (newer also) but it lacks a few features of the FL. Pretty much a toss-up to me. But I will never own another trailer with an inside sliding door.

cfpinz, you are right about the doors rattling. I ended up on the escape door glueing some rubber on the latch. That helped a lot. The rear door I haven't quite figured out how to de-rattle it yet. :lol:

pinz and flaboy are both right - FL can rattle a little but I never pay any attention to mine, I just turn up the radio. Those two characters worry about it making noise because they are out late at night either stealing cattle or running around with people they shouldn't be!! LOL !!!!!
 
i've got two 24' Wilson trailers that I am very happy with...and my brother has 2 53' Wilson stock trailers that he hauls with his big truck...one is about 10 years old and he hasn't found 1 bad thing to say about it yet

I've never hauled with a Featherlite so I can't comment on them, but i've hauled with Eby and Merritt trailers and I like them both too

But I still prefer Wilson over the rest
 
I have a Wilson trailer I'm very happy with.

I think Merritt make a very good trailer also. You may want to look at those Eby trailers too. I talked to a livestock hauler that said he put over a million miles on a Eby trailer with no problems at all.

The punched holes in the Wilson, Merritt and Barrett trailers can be a problem with horned cattle.

You just don't pay much attention to the noise because of that mullet covering your ears! :lol:

Naw, we are just trying to keep Crowder furnished with those heiferettes he likes so much. Ya gotta sneak up on them and catch them just right. If not, can you imagine one of those things rolling over on you or charging you? :shock:
 
Thanks for all the replies! It is appreciated. My Featherlite has an inside sliding door and yes, it is noisy but I guess I haven't had a big problem with it. I'm told the Wilson has an outside sliding door. Is it noisy? If, heaven forbid, a holder breaks on the Wilson outside sliding door, can the door swing out and allow an escape.

Can anyone comment on the floors? I like the floor on my Featherlite, the grooves which run the length of the trailer allow for drainage and I like the fact that the floor is level for hauling other goods on occasion. The Wilson and Merrit trailers I saw have checkerplate floors with raised ribs running the length of the trailer. How are these to clean?

Is the number of cross members in the trailer floor a big deal. A fellow from Wilson told me that the trailers they send to Canada have more cross members because there are more gravel roads up here.

How does everybody rate these trailers for durability?

Its not so much the gravel that requires additional crossmembers, but rather rough roads. Potholes and ridges cause structural twist along the length of the trailer, which tends to work on welds and break them free. More crossmembers = more resistance to structural twist = fewer problems with floor welds/rivets breaking out.
