I just read the 20 Q&A chapters based on his column in the Stockman Grass Farmer mag. The main topics were a mix of production, marketing, and business. Some of the themes were around increasing knowledge, increasing flexibility, and being seasonal. I am not much on direct marketing. The main business and production points I got were:
Apply lime and grow legume mixes to increase ADG. Include alfalfa if it fits for help during drought or the summer slump.
Match livestock to the land and the climate.
Reduce labor by being seasonal.
Reduce costs by being seasonal.
Increase flexibility by seasonal stock(er)ing.
Winning is about coaching, confidence, and willing to be different.
Understand what your competitive advantage is.
The interesting part for me is the potential efficiency of a crop/pasture rotation, using alot of crop residue and meadow hay for winter feed. My 2013 projections are that cattle and $6 corn per acre can return about the same GM in my area. The differences are in the capital, the labor, and the skills required...
