Just got my semen tank and semen for this year. Used tw18xt, filled. Got a good deal on it. Got to meet the abs rep. I have all the supplies, gun, sheaths, gloves, lube, cutter, etc. all drugs and cidrs on hand, needles etc. now all there is to do is wait for the rest of the cows to calve and set them up. In the meantime I offered to AI a few of my friends cows at direct cost just so I could practice. And the rep invited me to another class on the day they do the most hands on practical work so I could get more practice.

Betcha couldn't tell I'm looking forward to this

I don't think from previous post, that your children are small, but my kindergarten age daughter invited me to class to show the process to her classmates. I opted to talk about the inter workings of a cecum instead, and reset a shoe on a horse. The ai would have also been educational though.

I took my first AI training when my son Jacob was 13 he was bound and determined that he was going with me. I finally gave in and said ok he really amazed me he did so well. At that time I worked full time for the school system and I had to leave the house before the kids, so I didn't know that Jacob had decided to do a demo in science class on AI until the teacher called. She said he did a great job but was a little shocked at the content and detailed explanation needless to say my face was red.

I have AI'd for years, but being an ag teacher, I was gone a lot. My husband went to AI school in 2008, but soon after his shift changed and he worked weird hours, so we send my, then, 13 year old daughter. She has been doing most of the AI since then. Her arm is smaller and she has more patience than dad and I. Of course, when she is gone at an FFA event or early morning contest, either I or dad picks up the slack. Here is a picture of her, of course right before leaving for school, AI'ing one of our cows (who is 282 days today from that AI!).

And this one she got mad at me for taking a picture at a very private moment :D

She is now 16, but that pic was last year when she was 15. At the AI school, they kept teasing her that they were going to get her a milk crate, or a 5 gallon bucket, to stand on so she could reach all the way!!! It was funny, but she has the best conception rates out of all of us :clap:

snake67 I know what you mean about farm kids, it was fun to hear my 6 and 8 year old daughters try and tell my four year son why the rooster jumps on the hens Sunday on the way home from church. I just turned the radio down a little and didnt say a word, they did a pretty good job of explaining it. It still scares my wife and her sisters that I know more about what goes on and why in there body, they always yell "were not cows".

I've posted several times taht my wife does our AI'ing. She's very very good at it too. She also raised all the baby calves and seldom ever lost one. Some things the ladies are just much better at than we old men. She does use the left hand inside tho and holds the gun in her right hand. She's also always selected the bulls to mate with certain cattle.

Well, if you notice, she has her wash pants on over her jeans (they wear these in the wash rack to keep pants from getting wet, also work good to keep jeans from getting green!) and she changed her shirt after. She is meticulous about the way she dresses for school, always nice jeans and nice top (burnout or the likes). She would never DREAM of wearing one of her good tops to AI, gosh knows how many times she gets green on her sleeve! :D But her hair is straightened, which takes her awhile since she has naturally tight curly blonde hair! I help her out in the mornings by setting up the thermos and getting all her tools ready. Along with thawing the semen for her. That way she just has to glove up and go. Of course, in the PM she does it all (well, I hold the wipes and lube for her) :nod:
Here is a close up of her, she just got done taking a sample for the Trich test on a bull we sold . She works at the vet clinic, loves her job!

Thats great FSR, but my daughter she won't even work the cows. And she wants to be a doctor, go figure.
My wife is way better at working the cows, than my son and myself. She has the patience.

My wife wants to take the course next year. Both she and deadeye have already been in cows. Mainly just to see if its something they're interested in.

Looks like you have raised a daughter to be very proud of! I would imagine she is going to excel in whatever she sets her mind on doing. I don't regret one minute spent at the barn with my boys and am sure proud of the men they have become. Jacob is now the proud papa of twin girls!

Sorry Hook, didn't mean to steal your thread :) I just wanted to point out that kids can AI too!

AFA my daughter, God had blessed our family. I have three great kids. She is my oldest and wants to be a vet (she thinks), and is in dual credit classes at school as a junior. She placed 3rd overall in the 4-H State Livestock Judging team, and is going to Aksarben in NE early in the morning with her team and coach to judge there. She is also on the grasslands judging team, and placed 1st high senior in a contest last week. She tries hard at just about everything she does, and knows that when we put God first in our lives all other things just line up :D
She does the phenotypic mating of our cattle, and I then line up the genotype, and we try to come to the middle somewhere without much argument. We AI just about everything in our herd, never having a bull older than 12 months around if we can help it! So, all of my kids are very responsible, and truly OWN their own cows (not just on paper!).

Why's that? I only loaded, hauled and set up the portable panels on one lease today, wormed those cows, changed the u joints on my truck, and I'm smoking some ribs. Todays an easy day :lol:
