All About You

Anyone know the EPDs on the club bull "All About You?" He's a bull for show calves and a girl in my barn just bred her chi heifer to him. I'm just curious as to his EPDs.

He is a composite Maine bull, as of spring epds are as follows.
BW 1.5 accuarcy .65
WW 24.3 " .41
YW 57 " .38
Milk 17.2 " .22
Maternal 29.4

I'll check in my sire index for that. It's got a lot of the good club bulls in there...just none of the EPDs for them. Only EPDs for purebreds. Thanks y'all.

One thing I've always boggled my mind about...club bulls are real nice and everything. Make real nice steers, most of em. But doesn't it seem strange when you think about the way they can be bi-registered and tri-registered? One bull could be a Shorthorn, a Chianina, and a Maine Anjou all at the same time. Whodathunkit? :|

I will probably stir up a sh-- storm, but I dont think you can put too much faith in the epds on these club calf bulls. Too many different variables, such as being registered by different breeds, also only the creme of the crop calfs will ever be turned in, and also the offspring of these bulls will have had a pampered upbringing. As a commercial cattlemen these types of animals are useless to us. Whats really a kicker, is that many seedstock producers are always chasing the show ring. A breeding bull is supposed to look like a breeding bull. That way perhaps he will pass on all the traits of his breed. These bulls that look like steers, just dont get the job done. Think of it this way, who do you want to breed your cows, a bull that is well muscled and hardy or a bull that looks like his been sitting on a couch eating chips

If it stirs up a storm, I'll be on yer side! I agree with many of the things that you've said...but it's what those clubbies are all about. They're real nice on the eyes and again...nice if you're just looking for steers. Now of course, if I ever used these bulls...it'd be for calves who would be subject to pampered upbringing as well so only seeing the offspring who've been subject to that dudn't bother me much. It just kinda bothers me that they can be registered as more than one breed.

A 88 pound birth weight maine bull,and using him on a heifer?You could be right,about the c-section.Defiantly not a bull i would pick,to breed a heifer to.

I agree, not sure how they can come up with any epd's on a Bull that is a composite of 3 breeds. I guess they have a way but not sure I would trust it. I think with club calf bulls you need to do more research on its reputation of those that have used him, than any epd's. With time certain bulls will get a trustworthy reputation for being easy calvers and also as Cow killers. Showsteers.com's message board is good at finding this information.

You'd think they'd just put them up against other club bulls? Though that's probably easier said than done.
