I have just 10 cows I want to A.I. next May. They are horned Hereford X Red Brangus F1's. I want to do a 3 way cross to maximize heterosis. This is strictly a terminal cross. I'm looking for a non angus, homo black, and homo polled sire. Hoss's posts turned me onto Gelbvieh. With that in mind what do ya'll think of this guy?

I want calving ease since this is my first try at the 3 way cross. I also want to maximize growth. I plan on keeping 2 or 3 calves for the freezer (Lots of friends and family have been bugging me the last 2 years for some beef). I'm wide open to any alternatives (hoping for alternatives to look at) or critiques of my plan. I have plenty of time to adjust.

I think the bull will work out just fine if you are set on having it homo polled and homo black. For strictly terminal use a little more frame wouldn't have hurt, 5.9 is a bit on the moderate side considering the goal. If your cows are already large framed then it changes the equation completely, though.

My personal choice would have been charolais, but then it wouldn't be black or polled.

Advantage is a good bull. His sire, Bennet Premier Z104, shows up in a lot of pedigrees. He has 1021 registered producing daughters in the breed. I don't think you could go wrong using this bull.

You might also look at http://bullbarn.com/gelbepd.asp?ID=199, and http://bullbarn.com/gelbepd.asp?ID=126.

The second bull, Goldrush Visa, would be a son of the Advantage bull.

No matter which you choose, all should give you some good Gelbvieh influenced calves.

Walt, I looked around for a long time and looked at allot of different breeds before settling on a Gelbvieh influenced bull. I was really impressed with the Gelbvieh breed overall. I like the muscle, growth and the good daughters that they bring to the table. I think you will be happy with the Gelbvieh influence.

I don't understand why you want to AI with a terminal sire. That can easily be accomplished with a herd bull, and requires a lot less time, effort, and money. AI is usually used to improve herd genetics, as well as the overall performance/traits of the herd. What am I missing?

An AI terminal bull would make a lot of sense for a herd that want's to keep replaements from cows that will be bred to a herd bull that would be used for multiple years. Probably depends on what is hopoing to be accomplished. If the majority of a herd would be bred to a terminal using a live bull might be a better solution and AI those smaller number to maternal (non-terminal).
We have cows that for one reason or another we wouldn;t keep a heifer from but raise excellent calves. Those get AIed to a terminal bull every year.

Well, maybe I'm taking some bad advice. I've been told it would be better to AI than to purchase a bull and deal with maintaining him not to mention the liability involved. I figure it will cost about $500 to AI ten cows. The tech said it would cost about $175 for the drugs, $100 to AI and then the semen wich I figure about $20 a straw.

I guess if I bought a bull for $2000 and he lasted 4 or more years that would be better (Not including upkeep). But If I bought a bull and he didn't last that long or up and died on me in a year I'd be deep in the red. I'm I missing something? Looking foward to your thoughts.

If you are set up for AI and have the ability to closely observe your cattle it is a good idea. The choices are endless for either terminal or keepers. The best part is you rarely have to say that the $2000 bull just did not produce what you expected. There are simply a lot more proven bulls you can have more assurance with.
Just out of curiousity why do care at all about the color, If the meat is for you, family and friends? I promise it will add nothing to the eating experience.

I know. I still have to sell the remainder to the sale barn. We do get a premium here for the black.

Although he's hetero polled and hetero black, I've always liked the looks of the GKT BOO BOO 155E bull. Does anyone have experience with him?

Only experience I have with him is we have 5 cows due in the spring bred to him.
