AI Tanks

I have 2 MVE 20/20s im sure there not the smallest or the cheapest around $500 but they hold real well have them filled every 16 wks could go 20 like there rated just not that brave. May have to fill alot more if you go smaller and cheaper so may not be cheaper in the long run. I think they will hold about 600 straws.

I have not owned one but I know the vet has some large SC tanks. It seems the hold times vary from model to model and you pay accordingly. How many straws are you looking to keep?

I really don't know...I've never ordered any semen and I'm not sure how it is delivered. I really would probably need only the absolute smallest I could but. I don't think I would ever have more than 20 straws at a time.

Most semen is sold in units of 5 or 10. Rare to get less. Might be cheaper to pay someone to keep it in their tank than have your own for 20 units.

If it's shipped directly to you it's shipped in a vapor shipping tank (no fluid) and you transfer it to your tank. If you order it from a stud that services your area they'll normally deliver it directly to your tank. Having a tank filled runs from around 20 bucks to 40 or so. If you get a tank that needs refilling frequently that's a cost you'll need to look at. If you don;t have a stud that services your area you'll have to figure in your cost for hauling the tank to get it filled.

Then I would have your local vet store for you. The cost is fairly low; much lower than storing it yourself. Like someone else already mentioned, see if you can get the owner to ship it direct. I bought 4 straws from the owner and 'assumed' they would be shipping it direct but it ended up coming out of Genex who charged more than what the semen cost. The shipper provides the container which gets normally gets shipped back to them after the transfer.

We have our own tank and it ran in that 450 range and it gets filled every other month. We have a little bit larger one because we have a lot of our own bulls semen in there to sell to producers. We ship it all over the country and a lot of folks go in with a neighbor to have one tank between the two or three of them. If you are going to be the one doing the AI then I would get one for yourself, but if you are having a vet or someone come out and do it I would see if you could keep it with them.

The deal wit hsharing the tank with someone works pretty well as long as it's primarily kept at one location and either semen is hauled thawed to wherever it's going to be used or the tank is hauled as needed, but it always has to go back to a fixed location. When we first got started in AI with dairy goats, 6 of us got together and each person had one canister that was theirs to use. All costs were shared equally by everyone.

You might talk to your semen rep cause I know my abs rep will rent/lease a tank and keep it at his place until you need it.
