AI suggestions on another herf cow.

Thanks for all the replies on the first cow I listed, got a great list of suggestions of bulls I'm planning to buying semen on anyway. Nice to have your help on matching things up.

I have another cow, 4 yr old, polled. She is big and wide, boss cow. She has good milk, could improve, but a good udder. She has consistanly thrown one of the top 2 or 3 calves each year.

What she needs to improve on; she is a very bullish looking cow, and while I haven't got a hiefer out of her (3 bull calves), I would like to improve the feminity, if possible, of her hiefers.

Any AI suggestions?

Post a pic of the cow! You aren't asking us to fix a weakness (feet and legs, udder, shoulders, etc) or improve EPDs or performance. Here we are just trying to make a good cow more stylish. We kind of need to see what we are working with.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm not interested in a critique of my cow. You probably know how these threads get on a tangent real quick :D . I posted a similar question about a scurred cow with weak udder and got some great advice on bulls to use.

Maybe it's not possible to improve on a bullish looking cows girlish appearance... I don't know, but any suggestions would help.

I always liked the appearance of Enforcer 107H daughters; but I am getting "behind the times". CS Boomer 29F produces goodlooking cows though some are a little BIG for my taste and that semen is probably too expensive. Braxton Giant 1 produces feminine daughters though again a little "old school" for SOME people. I like the Feltons Legend 242 daughters that I have seen to this point and that semen is cheap and plentiful; though SOME people like a bigger framed cow.

8E also came to mind right away, but his semen is getting a bit pricey. We bought a son of his this spring when we happened to see one.

Here's a son of 8E, DJB LLL 8E Benchmark 26P that has semen available. We know the cow line and they are some nice cows.

Benchmark is a good looking bull. Just don't like to look at a bulls picture and see white testicles. I rather see red testicles. But, Benchmark does have really good bloodlines in him, from 8E to X4. His dam, May, is the top cow at Banks Polled Herefords in Ohio. Take care. :cboy:

Are you saying you know Doug well enough to say that cow is his top cow?

BTW, 1848, hope you didn't misunderstand, Benchmark isn't the bull we purchased. We did purchase semen from him and hope to have a few calves on the ground next year. While picking up the semen we saw this bull on Doug's farm and bought him. He's also out of 8E and we should have about 20 calves from him next spring. This guy is a March yearling and we put him with about 8 heifers. We just kept adding cows to his pasture as they calved until we got up to 20. He's been out with the cows 3 months and he still looks as good as the day I took this picture.

No, I didn't misunderstand you at all, just glad to see you run a registered hereford, know your bloodlines and pick a line that has worked well. Good looking bull. Would like to see a cleaner sheath, but definately carries the 8E characteristics (had some 8E bloodlines myself). How is his eye set, does he carry much pigment?

I agree on the sheath, but I'm hoping our cows clean that up. Eye set is good, not quite as hooded as a Kootenay X 19D son we have but definitely better than our bull out of Stockmaster 512 X Keynote daughter. He has good pigment, testicles are red skinned, red pigment around the rim of his eyes but no red hair. We were looking for something to add some depth to flank and smoothness through the shoulders into the chest. He has good carcass EPD's as well as good ultrasound results. Add in his mother line that is full of DOD's and I think he'll do a good job for us.

That's smart. Having show animals to market your stock and gain some customers does no good if the animals can't perform in the pasture.

He is smooth polled. Used on our mix of horned and polled cattle we have gotten the rare scur, no horns.
