We just started timed sync protocol this weekend on 3 heifers (all 14-15 months old). They were too young to have been bred any earlier, and we don't want to have them miss a full year if possible. So we will give them one try at AI. Two of the three are being sold to a guy who doesn't mind when they calve, and we will keep the third one. Not ideal, as we have moved the rest of our herd from summer to spring for next year. Assuming the one we are keeping "takes" on the first AI (big "if"), and assuming she calves okay, we may wean her calf a bit early and try to get her bred back a bit early.
In these Northern climes, July-August aren't the best times to calve, but I'm not gonna do like some of the old-timers here who calve out in Feb-Mar. Yikes.
