What AI bull has given you the best results on beef calves from your commercial cows? I know several of you AI your commercial stock instead of running bulls.

Dun, (my hero) which bull (Angus preferably for buyer) gives you the carcass quality you want without having to spend all of your profit on feeding the calves. Chuckie

you might consider trying Angus Bull, Oak Bowery Alliance 723. He is quite possibly the best bull ever out of SITZ Alliance 6595. his numbers are BW 79lb, WW 964 lb, YW 1530 LB
EPD's BW 3.4, WW 47, YW 91, Milk 24.
ribeye scan 17.8, SC. 38 cm
he is a tremendously thick and powerful angus bull
semen is avaliable from the bull owners.

maybe he "could" become the best son of 6595, but i'd say for a young, unproven bull thats a pretty big statement to make considering all the progeny from 6595.

I want to know about a bull that someone has actually used for commercial purposes. When I thumb through the catalogs, I see a lot that I really like. But at the same time, I don't know what it took to get them there.

I do have some cows that are SITZ Alliance 6595 bloodline, and they are good thick cows and have meaty rumps. He is a
very good bull.

I am not looking for a fancy show bull either. Just a sound one, but eye appeal helps more than it hinders. But at the same time, I don't want his calves to look like a Wildebeest.

He doesn't have to be show material either. Some of our older commercial cow are slightly cow hocked, but it never has caused problems. Some slightly toe out on the front. They have had a calf each year for over 10 years and stayed sound.

Dun, (me on the side walk ) what company provides semen for these two bulls?

Dun, I cannot find any info on "ARA 533603." What is he?
I do like the Red Angus real well; how do the buyers react to them? One of our commercial cows threw a red calf, both parents black Angus and it is a big calf. Do the Red Angus throw blacks occasionally?

Red Angus cannot throw a black, b/c they are homozygous recessive for the red color gene

If a Red Angus bull is bred to a Homozygous Black female are you sure that calf wont be black? Im pretty sure it will be.

Yes, the calf will be black. Not exactly sure what Chuckie was asking, but if he was asking about RA on RA, then Ryan was correct. Red on red will always throw red. Red on homozygous black will always throw black, no matter what the breed.

this could be said for almost any bull out of 6596 when the accuracies are that low.

and just to be complete...

red on hetero black will throw black 50% and red 50%

So what I said is true , He just MIGHT POSSIBLY be the best 6595 son ever .

Chuckie,

Take a look at Ironwood New Level. We've had calves out of him the past couple years and they have been some of our best and most consistent Angus sired calves. You can find him on the ABS website at http://www.absglobal.com

Ironwood New Level packs a lot of muscle in his neck and shoulders. I saw some of his offspring sell a few weeks ago. They were stout.
The man we sell our commercial cattle gives $.15 more a pound for a black angus than he does a red angus. He says he wants to deliver what the feedlot pays the most for. So if we take a 500 lb black calf, and a 550 red calf, we still make more on the black calf. That difference can add up.
It isn't fair, but you have to go along with the buyer when you are looking for a profit.

Dun, Have you used a Black Angus bull before that you liked? I asked Kevin about the Red Angus bulls, and he said if I come home with straws from a Red Bull, that I would have to experiment with our neighbor's cows. A lot of our Black Angus cows have a red gene in there somewhere. We know the bull we are using has Beefmaster in his background. An occasional red calf does pop up. We have only had one this year.

The Red Angus beef should not be discounted, as well as most of the other breeds. Right now, the buyer determines what we raise for profit.

For what it's worth:

We had a New Level calf gain over 6 lbs per day on a 112 day test. His adj yearling weight was over 1300 lbs. and he had a 16 inch ribeye. If you're feeding your own calves, he might be something to look at. Plus, ABS has him in their Spring Special. He is a framey bull, though, if that's a problem for you.

Under "Spring Calving Ease Speciall" at this link:

Thanks Frankie and UG. That is what I am looking for. I will go to that link.

Dun, for some reason, I knew you were going to say that!

Kevin and I were talking and he was talking about the Red Angus again tonight, and was telling about watching a show on RFDTV that had Leachman on the program. He said they were showing the Red Angus and they were good looking cattle, but he is so set on "black!" Once he has his mind made up, it is hard to sway it. Believe me, I have tried a time or two.
