Age Verified Prices

Someone asked what the difference was on age verified vs non age verified cows.

We sold 22 dry cows a week ago. 7 were age verified. We had 5, 2-4 year old AV cows that sold for .3675/lb. Our auction barn grades the cows into pens, and the pen that these cows would have gone into sold for .245/lb.

Had 1 older AV cow that brought .3575/lb and the pen she would have gone to sold for .2450/ lb as well.

We did have a couple of other younger cows that brought .36 -.37/lb that were not AV.

If I read that right, and understand it correctly, there's not much of a difference there.

Is there a difference if sold through 'special' sales?

Wow prices really have dropped those are almost back to "03 prices.. :mad:
I guess I shouldn't b@tch about the prices we got last week, and two of the girls were 12 years old.

Now calves are going for a buck a pound whether they weigh 400lbs or 1000lbs,,, all a buck. The neighbors sold some heifer calves and average weight was around 650lbs ,he got an average of 71 cents a pound :? .

I think you may have read it wrong, The AV cows sold for about $.12/lb more than the non-AV cows. Mind you, it isn't real scientific, as we were the only people in the sale that had any AV cows in it.

There are no special sales for cull cows. This was an All Class sale which basically means that anything can be brought to the sale. Mostly it is just cows and bulls that show up, but there can be yearlings, calves and bred stock too.

AV really didn't seem to help anyone out with the calves here. I know AB is going to mandatory AV, and I think that it will affect us more once it happens. Not that the AV calves will see a premium, but that the unverified calves will possibly be docked.

Hillsdown, the prices, are terrible, but there are so many cull cows on the market that it isn't funny. Swift Current sold 1400 head of cull's last week. That is unbelievable. So, it isn't a big surprise that cow prices have dropped. Bred cattle are practically worthless, sometimes bringing even less than slaughter prices. On the upside, we averaged about $.10/lb more this year on the culls than we have for the last 2 years. It sure isn't big money, but better than what we have seen for a while.

I sold a purebred Herf long yearling bull in Winnipeg on Friday. 1165 lbs. Went for 43.50. Prices are way down from even two weeks ago. He had his papers and was age verified.
