Advice on building fence on rough terrain

At least half of the other half doesn't have a contractor worth hiring. See a lot of skid steers pounding posts 2 feet into the ground only to watch the clay and frost push them right back out in a year or two.

That's why I've learned to do just about everything myself because I hate paying some so called "professional" to do a half-a$$ed job.

Apples to oranges. One is a speciality industry with an educated/skilled Dr. The other is a task that a trained monkey could do.

Applying your logic nobody would have fence/cattle in half the world where there isn't a fence contractor to be hired.
Understood.
My bad . After reading back I should have noticed you lack the capacity to grasp friendly sarcasm. Good day and try to stay warm.

I live in the world of steep ground and rock. It depends on your rock. Big enough that the cows wont or can't cross we will build up to the rock and then skip to the other side and start a new fence. Build rock jacks. Build basically an A shaped piece out of 2x4 stretch the wire over the rock then staple the wire to the A to support and space the wire. And I have worked with a couple different drills to drill a hole big enough to fit a T post into the hole. Those type of drills aren't cheap and take power to run them. The picture is of a bigger rock jack. They don't cost much to build. We also build them out of metal. Old bent T posts work good for that. I just don't have a picture of a metal one.

can do gabion baskets if you have a lot of loose rock. tie a bull panel into a circle and fill 'er up.

been looking to start rebuilding 70 to 100 year old boundary fences on this place. I have been told it will cost anywhere from 3 to 12 a foot with the lower amounts being labor only. found a guy that actually showed up for 3.50 on the easy ground and said he would hold to 4.50 up on the rocky slope. I bought most of the materials in December, so going to start with a mile and a half next month. that is a lot of money for me/this place. we aren't new-pick-up, lots of metal, outside jobbers. this place pays for itself and us to be mostly comfortable. materials will have to be hand carried or packed on mule/horse. it isn't remote and it isn't far from roads, but there aren't any to it except at either end. the fence will have to be hand built and they are talking about drilling in some places. I doubt they will really have to, the rock is pretty loose and there is a prior fence that wasn't drilled. still, it is a steep son of a gun up the mountain. I can't do it. I had a heck of a time getting ANYBODY to come look at any price. most crews won't get off their sidebysides or skids

I can still do flatter ground but my days of pounding posts after carrying up a steep hill are over. this job needs doing 10 years ago. it has burned at least 3 times in my life and the cattle are going back and forth like it isn't there anymore.

if cattle prices hold we might finish that mountain in the fall. otherwise patching will have to hold for a while longer.
