Accurate Rain gauge

What is the most accurate rain guage, I have 2 giveme gauges one is tubular the other narrows to a V at the bottom the tubular always measures more rainfall, for instance yesterday the tubular had 3.7 " the V had 3.1 " and that is about the same difference each time it rains. It just seems the tubular should be the more accurate.What has your experiences been comparing different gauges. Because you know when you go to the auction , the first question you get is how much rain did you get and each person tries to outdo the next even if it floods you want to get the most.

I had the two types you are talking about mounted on the same post and at the same elevation less than an inch a part. the tapered one would always read about 10% less. Hard to tell on small rains but any rain of an inch or more it was really obvious. Don't really know which was correct.

I just stick a ruler in the dog dish - seems to work pretty good.

I have the same setup on one of my gate post going into the pasture. The tapered one always reads less.

If the non-tapered one read 1", the tapered one would read somewhere a bit above 3/4". When someone asked how much rain we got I just responded 3/4" to 1".
