Not sure where to post this so I decided to put it here. My parents are 71 and semi-retired. They farmed most of their lives but stopped row-cropping about five years ago and now rent almost all of their crop land out. Their primary activity is cattle. I just discovered today that my father does not have a separate business bank account for the cattle/farm AND NEVER HAS. They have one checking account in one bank. All of their personal and farm related business is conducted out of this account.

I learned of this when dad called to complain that he wasn't getting images of his checks and is having difficulty preparing his taxes. I suggested he call the bank to see if the images are still available. I also said he should think about using Quicken and online banking as I have done for the past 7 or 8 years. Didn't get a good response to that question.

Anyhoo, just curious, how many here use software for accounting purposes, and is it pointless to convince a 71 year old guy to try new things?

It may be pointless, maybe not. My grandparents never had a bank account. I don't think I would try to enter them into the digital age at this stage of life. I would hire a good accountant and help them cypher all you can

Nothing wrong with a small operation using the same checkbook. He just needs to be counting on the check copies or tabs to keep track now.
The banks will send you (for a fee)miniature copies of your checks, but you need a magnifier glass to read them.

It's not pointless. My dad picked up technology at about 70. Most community colleges have free technology classes for seniors.

My Dad is 87 and has a I phone 4S, and knows how to use most of it. He talked me into getting a laptop in 06 and internet service. I would not bank on the internet myself. And your Dad could probably use a good farm Accountant.

YES it's pointless for adult children to try to CONVINCE a parent to change.
Curiosity or desire to change has to come from within each individual.
You can show him an option and gauge his interest from there by answering any questions he may have.
But don't push, follow his lead, he's independent and can make his own choices or decisions on how he wants to do things.

They don't really keep receipts. He goes through his checks (or for the past 12 years its been images of his checks) and looks at what he wrote in the memo. Sometimes he can't read his handwriting. Sometimes he forgot to put something in the memo and he can't remember what it was for.

The problem now is some businesses (like walmart) don't really run your check, the run the routing number like a debit card and give you your check back. Hence, no imaged check. So you will get a bank statement showing a transaction amount and the business, but not what it was for.

If he kept a ledger, had a dedicated business checking account, or used Quicken and online banking regularly maybe it wouldn't be an issue.

The ironic thing about this is dad has a business degree and back in the 60s he worked for the accounting department of a major petroleum company, using early punch card computers, no less. But, that was 45 years ago...
