I have a cow that has been grazing in a remote pasture with a softball sized growth on her right side just past her last rib approximately 1/3 of the way up her side. Would that be too high for a hernia or would it be something else? I tried to take a picture but isn't as easily noticed on camera vs in person. I have the vet coming out tomorrow morning to take a look?

I penned her and another cow up at the barn this evening just before dark and didn't run her thru the chute to check it out since the vet will be out early tomorrow morning.

Well it turned out to be an abscess that we assume was caused by her getting poked by the thorns on a locust tree. The vet used a heavy gauge needle to pull a sample out to see what it was then made about an inch and a half incision to drain it and flush with iodine solution. She gave her a shot of penicillin for a quick acting antibiotic as well as a shot of Exceed for more longer-lasting treatment
