a vacation

At the ripe old age of 63, I finally took a vacation that was not spent doing cattle work.

I went somewhere I wanted to go and did something I wanted to do just because I wanted to.....

Hand to God....first time in my life.

actually we did even thought we were riding and active....

we had as much fun cooking and eating as we did with the horses and we had a great time riding.

back story is some of the other guys thought we were putting too much effort into eating. one guy was just going to live on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the whole trip. These same guys have religious objections to buying beer....not drinking but buying...get what I mean...

So that just pushed Stewart and I over the edge on trying to cook. I put all the food photos in to show those who did not go what they missed.

Stewart and I are working on recipes for our next trip.

They did you a favor by staying home. Glad you had a good time Jim. Just remember that you can't go back and buy those days. Get out and enjoy your life while you still can. It seems like I lose a friend every year who didn't want to take the time to smell the roses until they laid em on his chest.

Stewart and I are already planning the menu for our next trip. probably just an over night to ride with another buddy at his place a few hours away.

Honestly thought I have pretty much done what I wanted to for the last thirty years. When I had all the cows, the cows were what I wanted.... as well as the work that came with them

May I suggest you look into dutch oven cooking? It's fun with the right cookbook and you can make a backcountry feast that will rival Thanksgiving dinner and it's pretty easy(with the right recipe). The joke around my house is that I won't even make myself a pb sandwitch at home but once we get to the cabin I'm chef Ramsey. :lol:

Very cool. That sounds like you guys really had a great time. I used to be one of those guys that never took all of my vacation. 4 years in the 82nd AB plus 8 years in the reserves (3 wars and several high intensity missions included) while going to school and working more than full time I suffered for 3 years with a severe ulcer. Lack of sleep and just shear exhaustion from several years of 75 to 100 hour weeks really took a toll until I learned to work hard and play harder. I have 4 weeks of choice vacation time plus 1 week of plant shutdown over the 4th of July. I will take EVERY day of it while I am still young enough to enjoy things with the kids. Take more vacation pdf.......we would miss you on here if you went to an early grave.

How does the saying go? Life is uncertain eat the desert first. The same thing applies to vacations. Life is way too short. Get out and enjoy yourself with more trips like this one.

Speaking of which...... one more minute and I am out of here for the next ten days. I have a bunch of cow stuff to do this weekend and next..... but the middle of next week the GF and I are going to take a road trip down to Crater Lake.

I took my dutch oven on this one but we had so much other stuff that I never took it our of the van,
