Hi I'm new to the whole cattle farming thing and I have a question. What does the term "back to farm" mean, when used as "back to farm heifer" or "back to farm bull"? Thanks :???:

Usually talking about baby calves that will be raised as bottle calves .

Well, I was reading a livestock report, and this was stated. "Back to farm heifers 90- 130lbs. 300.00 to 535.00. Does that mean that $535 was paid for a 130lb calf? That doesn't make sense to me, when a good feeder was going from 75.00 to 92.50, and good veal was going from 71.00 to 95.00. Explain plz :???:

These are Holstein heifers that are going to be milk cows .

So you're saying that these are dairy heifer calves that are selling up to $535 a head? Just making sure I was reading it right.

That actually means that the price was 300.00 to 535.00 per cwt.

Not so sure, around here babies sell by the head.
 
To me "Back to Farm" means just what it says..someone buying cattle to take home to become replacements....same for bulls...
 
In your report, it is dairy heifers and they are being sold by the head. That is about what dairy heifers are going for right now. So, their best 130 lb heifer calf brought 535 dollars for the calf at that sale.
Back to farm means anything that is going back to the farm as a replacement. For instance a dairy heifer, or a beef cow, or a dairy cow, or even a beef heifer, or a bull good enough to go back to the farm as a breeder. Animals that would not be back to farm would be feeder calves, steers, slaughter cows, slaughter bulls, feeder cows, or freemartin heifers.
