this is a fertilizer vs land purchase. with fertilizer costs at 320 A ton. if you have 100 acres and put the recommended 200 lbs to the acre that is 10 tons x $320 = $3200x 3 times a year= $9600 plus labor/fuel. over ten years that is close to $100,000. that would buy an additional 30 to 50 acres($2000-$4000 an acre) average acre price. Most people won't pay off there land in ten years so maybe you finance a little longer and buy more or less depending on land cost. My question is would the additional land feed what the fertilizer would have added in extra grass. the figures are based on just 100 acres. if you have 500 acres that would be 5 times that.

re-read the post. did you finish high school and is math hard for you. I said RECOMMENDED. If you have ever had a soil sample most would say to add that after your hay cuttings. Nowhere in my post did I say I spent that. If was a question which appears to be WAY over your head.You say you spend less than a quarter than that. That would be less that 50 lbs per acre during the whole year. Man your cows must love you, they don't have a choice since you are aren't going anywhere. Remind ME NEVER to buy anything from you. You are far to smart for me to contend with.

If you read the question it is a hypothetical question about would adding land for the cost of fertilizer be a wiser investment. I asked this and some jackass started calling bs. These facts were not a recomendation just what MY soil sample says to put out. I will get with the the university of arkansas and tell them that some computer farmer thinks that is to much to apply.
do you only put out fertilizer once a year., if so then I understand yuur prices. If like most that cut hay, they re fertilize after every hay cutting. if you cut hay 3 times then oyu do the math and come up with a fertilizer fee. my question some just can't seem to grasp. take the $9600 away and put what ever you spend. could this add you additional rented land or pay part of a land mortgage.
If your soil test call for that much fert you need to figure what the maintence level is and then do a build-up for X numer of years. This would then give you accual fert cost/yr to do your hypothetical problem.
