Went through some old photo albums, here is some pictures of pictures from the 80’s. Doesn’t seem like it should be that long ago.
The pictures of the road tractor, and the steers eating were from somewhere in the early 80’s. I’m not sure how many times they had a road tractor to haul the steers, but I believe it was a couple times anyways, sometimes several cattle trucks early on and trailers. The steers were my parent’s cattle, they ran a couple groups of around 80-100+ at a time each year. That was one of the later groups of steers, because I see some Charolais in the group. I remember when I was real young in the late 70’s real early 80’s most all the steers were black, BWF, or Herefords. Then there started to be Charolais and CharolaisX and maybe a few Limousins.
That’s me at 14 in 1989, with my little group of registered Charolais heifers.
That square headed scurried heifer in the top picture made a great cow, her second calf set a record for me. She had a bull calf that weighed 900# at around 8 months old.

You know it sure is perplexin to me how people actually managed to raise cattle back then without EPD’s and AI companies and so on.

In my area I bet 1 out of 50 cant read and understand EPD's today.
I had a guy call tonight looking for a 900lb bull to breed his cows. But needed it to be cheap. Said it could be black, black white face, hereford, Charolais, Charolais cross, or Red.

Like a fiend of mine that used to run a dairy says, they want a cow freshener.
I used to have those kind of calls too. They’d pick the top end bulls then when priced they’d ask about the lower end.
I’d say around here most that understand EPD’s understand just enough to be dangerous, they know they want calving ease.

Not as easy as you might think. Most of those become steers before they get that big

If they are still bulls at 900 you can make steers or sell a bull and still make money. Since it is only 1 you need it is more likely you can have a lucky day.

I know at least 6 ranchers who own a cattle pot. They are not the newest shiny one. But they are not on the road everyday. When you have a lot of cattle to move they work better than a fleet of goose neck trailers. And it must be cheaper for them to own one than it is to hire it done.
