A little rain does wonders!

I didn't think I would be saying this a month ago, with the lack of rain and the way the fields and pasture looked, but we were able to put up a little more hay the last couple days. Now my only decision will be, should I hold it to sell later on or should I go to the sale barn and buy a few more head. It sure is good to have a choice again. It was beginning to look like we might have to buy a little hay just to get the animals we have thru the winter. Things look a lot better now. We have gotten some pretty good moisture lately

I was thinking the same thing just yesterday. The little rain we've got actually has made the farm look green again. And the calves are loving it! They're heads are down munching all the time.

It sure is nice to have the choice though. I rotate 8-10 head on 3 five to six acre pastures and they can't even stay up with the growth on my bahia. I wish I had cut and rolled the 2 fields now, it would have been nice to have a little extra hay for a cushion, or I could have sold it. I had the man that cut my hay last year come over and look at 11 of the acres and he told me it was the best looking field he has seen in this area and would probally cut 3 rolls min per acre.

I drive around and have noticed alot of other pastures in my area and no one has the growth I have. I wonder why too, I fertilize my pasture with 2 tons of chicken liter/acre 2 times each year and and drag the cow piles at least 2 times. My grass is over 1 ft high and thats not including the sead heads.

I have a cut timber section ( 10 acres) that I pushed up in long rows to burn this fall and plan to plant the middles with rye for winter forage. I plan to double my herd through the winter if we continue to get the rains this fall and winter.
