A few winter pictures from today...

I set out a few more bales this morning and was struck by the beauty of the combination of frost and snow. I am really appreciating the bale wrap as it would be near impossible to get the frozen net wrap off if these bales were not wrapped.

Second picture is a heifer I purchased last spring in ND sired by the Tundra bull. She is really looking good, in my opinion. Beefy, wide and solid. I am looking forward to seeing her calf by my T021 bull.

Third picture is of a couple steers I saw in the distance aggressively grazing in the standing corn. They were searching for ears in an area of the paddock with deep snow they had not been in before. Best I could do with a pocket camera but they were really going to it.

Cattle are in good conditon, are you feeding something other than hay? How many inches of snow is on the ground?

Cows, bred heifers and weaning heifer calves are on hay only and mineral tub. I set out enough for 2.5% of body weight per day. As I posted earlier, the steers are grazing corn for the past week or so. They still have access to hay also.

There is about 15-18" of snow on the ground but high winds last week caused it to drift deeper in many spots including in the corn.

Thank you for the kind words on the cattle. They will be calving starting in mid-March including the Tundra heifer.

I may be in a minority here, but I actually LIKE this weather!

It beats mud and extreme heat in my opinion. As I understand it, Herefords are comfortable from about 0 degrees F to about 70 degrees F. Now if we could just find a way to go diectly from snow and 20 degrees F to green grass and 60 or 70 deg F that would be nice...

Knersie, that's good. I imagine yours see higher temperatures? I am not familiar with the climate in your part of the Third World.

I was also hoping you would comment on the pictures of my new U070 bull and my retained bull calf (go ahead, I can take it) here having their weekly gentling treat: (posted under the genetic gain thread)
