A few pics from today.

It was gorgeous out today, and I got to see hubby for a whole 1/2 hour before he left for another couple of days.. :lol2: Of course I put him to work while he was here and got him to give bedding. So here are a few pics of cows/heifers a couple babies and a few bulls.

We got to 2 above celcius and after that horrible cold and wind all week, I thought I was dreaming. ;-)

The little guy behind the girls is the steer that got hurt on the trailer when we shipped the steers last fall. He is just now getting back to normal and is starting to gain some weight back.

ILH the weather is completely nuts we are supposed to get to above 5 next week, what a mess. Now that the temps have warmed up Nikki is wandering more than I would like.. :roll:

Mo, he is going to lose the tip of his right ear but other than that he should be OK. The cattle are doing very well as far as condition ,especially since they are being rationed heavily and we have had crazy ,cold record temps so far.

There certainly is a lot to like, like most young purebred herds your cowherd still needs to mature and settle on a type. That will come with the wisdom of hindsight in seeing which AI sires worked for your conditions, but you'll get there.

Whats the deal with the holstein calf, I knew you had a dairy in the past and still have a few cows you flush, I believe? Are you raising replacemnets for other dairy farmers?

The dam should be somewhere else but I pulled her at the last minute after seeing the operation. Long story and not for here, so the heifer calved here and gets to raise her calf. The calf was already spoken for but the decision is still mine.

I am pretty sure what I want for type. I want easy fleshing, moderate framed cattle and I think the blks will not be included, also 1/3 of the cows in the pics are bred heifers.

Thanks Knersie, it has only been a few years but having a closed herd and breeding within makes it all worth while. I just wish there were more options for AI bulls, it seems like the ones I really like do not pass the grade for import to Canada.. If the drought does not get us again, I will keep plugging along as I love going out and seeing how they progress each year. :)

I need to add that the dark red heifer around the feeder is Stormy my bottle calf from 08 ,,guess you really can make a heck of a cow out of a bottle baby.. :lol2:

I retired in the South to escape the cold weather. One more mistake, It's cold here aswell. I like your Red Angus cattle and I am hopeing to make the breed change this year. I notice that you have a bale bed feeder. How do you like it. Does it save hay. Stay warm.

Kerly I use feeders all the time. The big empty one covered in snow can hold up to 5 bales at one time but after the dispersal last fall I do not need to use it. I switched to only hay saver feeders a few years ago and it was the best money I ever spent. They really save on wasted feed and I usually only have to move the feeders a few times throughout the season. I have thought about bale grazing but we have mostly alfalfa in our hay fields and cattle will trample an alfalfa field ,also my calving season limits what options I have for feeding as they need to be close to home so I can check it doesn't take much to have a calfsicle.

It is plus 5 celsius here today and it looks like it is going to be nice for a while ,I just hope it does not start to get mucky. That would kinda defeat the purpose of winter calving.

I am seriously kicking around the idea of grazing corn ,they would be able to graze until the end of December hopefully and then I can pull them in to start calving in Jan. There is a blk angus herd down the road that corn grazes every year and the cattle do very well on it.

Thanks for the comments, we have a long way to go and hopefully we will still have our health to be able to continue to do what we enjoy, well into the years to come.

You have some really nice pictures. How in the world did you do it? I've been trying to post for over an hour and it will say the pictures are too large or they have been updated yet they are nowhere to be found. Even followed the EASY steps listed. Thanks

I use photobucket it is the easiest way, choose the 17 " screen setting and then when you want to post them on here just go below the pic to IMG code, copy and then paste it here on your post. It is easy or believe me I would not be able to do it.. ;-)

Make sure you keep all your settings private when you sign up to photobucket and do not use your name as a user name, your name that you use here will suffice.

HD those are sure some nice Gelbvieh's. I will say one thing. Your cattle give new meaning to the old expression " Hair like a bear" haha. They may not be cookie cutter cattle yet but it sure looks to me like you're on the right track. Keep up the good work. :tiphat:

Very nice. Not to get to far off the subject but how wide and tall are those buildings and did you guys build them or buy them.

I think your calfsickle looks like he has adjusted. I hate the cold I dont know how you guys do it.
