A cow 'maternity ward' flourishes in western Illinois

The pregnant heifer didn't belong to the Jacks. They were caring for her as part of the unique farm business they run 15 miles from the Mississippi River — a maternity ward for cows.

My grandfather used to have a maternity ward near the house, it was a level field about the size of half a football field. He would put them in it and watch them for days/weeks. He would even get up in the middle of night to check on them. When I was little he wouldn't explain the birds and bees to me so I always thought the cows dug up there calves in that field LOL.

Can't get the article without a subscription and a bunch of ads! I do have a "Maternity Ward" pasture in view of the house for my cattle. After searching for calves in the woods and bear holes in Oregon, it is nice to have a good, flat pasture, with a clear view of what's going on with mammas and babies.
