A couple heifer calves (pic)

I was out walking around the herd the other evening and snapped a picture of two spring heifers I am planning on retaining. I like the capacity and build of the one on the right especially. Weaning next week at right around 205 days on both of these.

I just read Knersie's pdf on Hereford selection for eye issue (under Jerry Hambly's bull post) and am liking the heifer calf on the right even more.

I am glad you like the one on the right. I prefer the femininity of the head and shoulders on the heifer on the left. I wish she had the depth of body in your heifer on the right.

I guess it is hard for me to over come training 4-H kids how to judge dairy cattle for nearly 30 years. I once saw a Jersey herd in Illinois that was selected on type (conformation) and their production ranked right there with those selected by records.

I see what you mean about the one on the right. One factor is the one on the right is much further ahead in growing out her woolly winter coat. I also think highly of her dam who is also blocky like this but an incredibly easy keeper that produces a heavy calf each year.
