Can anyone tell about a 93 F250 with a 7.3 deisel engine? Looking for a farm/beat around truck to haul some hay with and the occasional tractor or other semi heavy load with. Won't be using it much for hauling, mostly running to the farm store and such for feed ect.

I called about one today that has 187K on it. He said it wouldn't hurt to have the glow plugs replaced but the truck sounded overall in fair shape. Has a gooseneck hitch in it already. Is that alot of miles for that engine and would it have adequate power to haul a 8K load? Oh its an automatice tranny too. Tranny rebuilt one year ago.

Thanks in advance....

Run as fast and as far as you can if it has an auto tranny.

If you are up for a challenge, put a 5 speed in it and you will have a great truck.
I have near 300,000 on my 92 7.3 and she is just now starting to get weak. But it started with an automatic tranny. It went out 3 times before we got smart. Put a 5 speed in it and havn't had a lick of trouble since.

I do, however, have another heart on standby for when this one gives up. But at 187,000 like the one you mention...you have a while before you need to worry about that if it was maintained right.

It has an auto tranny in it. Think I will pass it up since I am not really up to the challenge of putting a 5 spd in it. I'll keep looking around some. I did find an 88 chevy 1 ton with a 350 4 spd manual in it. Its a single axle 4x4. I may go look at it if the guy gets back to me.

To bad it has the auto trans, the late 7.3's were great pickups. Still have the 94 F-350 I bought new (first new vehicle I ever owned) with the factory turbo (not powerstroke). I wish they still made them, as they were nice pickups, but not covered with lots of electronic crap to go bad. I knew a diesel guy who worked on the engine/exhaust and about $800 later it would pull with a stock early powerstroke. Best part it is still runs great, odometer quit working years ago around 300,000, along with fifth gear, but it still is a great ranch truck. Like I said, wish they still made them.

Darned if the Chevy isn't sold! There is a 92 Ford F250 in the same paper as the Chevy was in. It's got 30K original miles on it. It was used a snow plow truck for a church and supposedly thats the only time it was driven to speak of. Only thing it has a little 302 in it....

If the tranny was rebuilt a year ago on that first truck I would go drive it, put the coal to er' and see how it shifts, the misconception about the automatic that people have is its just a slushbox and worthless. Well, problem is when pulling hard that tranny fluid gets real hot and thin and thats when it starts to wear, auto's especially in diesels if your using them to haul should have the fluid changed at least every 30k, thats my speal, just because its an auto doesnt mean its junk, check it out the old IDI's are awesome long lasting trucks. We currently have a 90' 7.3 2x4 and it has a little over 400k on original motor/trans (though manual) had a couple injector pumps but for the most part its paid for itself.... :cboy:

I'm gonna try and slip over after work and take a peak at that 93 diesel ford truck.

Note the bold type. That is my point. The auto tranny will not hold up if you are hauling anything with it. We tried Jasper transmissions too. They would not even back up their warranty. Tranny went out under a year. The ford garage put it in and serviced it just for the purpose of the warranty.

Putting the 5 speed in it was a couple day job but nothing that was beyond do-able in a farm shop.

My fuel mileage is better with the 5 speed too.

Drove an F350 for a while with an auto and 7.3. Loaded pretty heavy and did some towing never had any tranny problems. I previously managed a shop in a fleet that had all manual transmissons, had friends in other fleets that ran all autos. They had less trouble than we did by the time you factor the clutches and extra wear on a engine. We broke a lot of crankshafts in trucks with manuals while it was rare in one with a auto.

I know what I wrote all I was getting at is that its been recently rebuilt, hence there is a good possibility that its still a pretty good tranny and if it is to take really good care of it and it will last a while....yeah never heard good about Jasper either
