Do any of you running these cows or using bull have increased twins? Neighbor had 6 sets this last year and I blamed it on 878 being a twin. I dont really know but thought since we seem to pass those type of genes on I figured cows did to. Any thoughts?
 
I would have to look at my records to give you an exact number, but I have 7 or 8 878 daughters in my herd, but haven't had any twins since 2003. That year, I had 3 sets out of 35 cows. Very rare I would assume, but none since then. Probably the law of averages catching up with me.
 
I'm fairly sure that twins run in families. We have never had a high occurence of twins with our beef cattle (I think we've had two sets) but we did have one Holstein family where we consistently got twins...but twins are quite often double trouble, I've never really heard of anyone actually breeding for twins. The calves are usually smaller, weaker, the cow has a harder time, and if you have a heifer & a bull the heifer will usually be a freemartin.
 
i read an article a few years back about a group of people collected who all the twins they could find. they were having a 170% calf crop, but what a headache and alot of extra work. i have never had live set yet had one lose twins at 5-6 months last year. ihave wondered if he produced more twins as much as he is used.
 
Some group was trying to establish a breed based on twining about 10-15 years ago. They were able to do what they set out to do but commercial cattlemen consider twins to be more of a headache than they're worth and I haven't heard anything about the breed in a long time.

Calving out regular heifers is more fun than I want. I can't imagine calving out a herd where even 1/3 of the heifers had twins.

I am not trying and neither is he for twins. We both think it is a headache as well but I blamed it on the cows being 878. I am probably wrong but 6 sets wow. JHH
