8 way vaccinations?

My vet just gave my 5 mo. old heifer's an 8 way vaccine. What does it protect against? How often will they need this vaccine? I live in Texas. Thanks!
 
Many thanks for your reply. The vet logged it as 8 Way so I'll phone him for a breakdown. I just didn't want to bother him with this unless I had to. Thanks again!
 
Its probably a clostridal (blackleg) vaccine Depending on the brand it can have Red water or Tetnus in Addition. Being your from Texas I would say its probably tetnus for the 8th thing.

With all due respect TC, "8-way vaccines" do not cover any of these things that you have mentioned. "8-way" is for Clostridial infections. ie Blackleg, Malignant Edema, Red Water, Blacks Disease and B, C, and D Enterotoxemia. 8-way should be given in addition to Triangle 5 or 10 for your Lepto and Respiratory stuff.

I do not know the laws in TX, but in CA our heifers have to also have a Brucellosis vaccine performed by the vet prior to 12 mos old if they are to ever be sold as a breeding animal. That includes a verifying tattoo in the rt ear and a metal tag.

We use Ultrabac 7/Sombac but I didn't realize it was referred to as "8-way" - good to know. That said, most likely geographic but our vet prescribes Triangle 9 +PH-K for the aforementioned including Pasteurella.

Same in KS. That's also when we have the vet pelvic measure.

Thankfully not in MO. When a female that isn;t bangs vaccinated all she requires is a blood test.

From what I was told the 7 is missing the red water. I give Ultrabac 8 and a few other brands of 8 way I just make sure they have an 8, red water is some nasty stuff.

Looks like you nailed it, Bird Dog. I checked with my vet and he rattled of a bunch of diseases regarding Clostridial.
Even though the Merck website you referred us to(thanks)doesn't provide me with any more understanding than when I asked the question. That'll teach me to ask too many questions that I can't understand the answers to. :lol:
 
I use Ultra Bac 8. It has Redwater in it. If you look up Redwater in the vet books I believe there will be a picture of my pastures there.

Most if not all of the 8 way vaccinations require a booster shot in about 4 to 6 weeks.
 
Covexin 8 is nice cause it has Red Water and Tetnus in it. Only 7 or 8 way clostridial that doesn't need a booster is Alpha 7.

Covexin 8 is a Clostridial Bacterin/Toxoid. It vaccinates for Clostridium tetani. Off hand, it is one of the only broad clostridials that covers tetani.

There are separate vaccines which are toxoids that specifically address tetanus. I use Covexin 8 and that eliminates vaccinating separately for tetanus.

Edited to add:
Calvary 9 by Merck covers tetani. Covexin and Calvary are in the same family of vaccines.
