7/18 Price’s

I sold 19 at the OKC stockyards on Monday.
4 steers at 700 1.35lb
4 steers at 605 1.45 lb
11 heifers at 615 1.3050

My heifers had only a 1% shrink. The steers actually had a small gain. $5 per head for two days worth of pelleted feed. I thought my shrink would be higher in the heat. They take good care of them in OKC.

Guaranteed Open heifers?
Seems like decent money
Almost weaning time for me. I'm itching to get em pulled. I guess I'll wait a bit tho. They will just get bigger.
Heifers I sold earlier in the year avg 115
:cry2:

Yes they were Guaranteed open. Weaned 54 days. Two rounds of shots. Wormed and implanted. They were on enough feed to get them eating good which is what you have to do to get the almost zero shrink. They sorted them and fed them just after they arrived. At OKC they are not commingled which is another plus. They are put in small pens with their own feed and water.

I sorted and weighed them up Friday morning. I hauled them Sunday morning leaving the ranch at 4AM. They sold Monday about 9AM.

My heifers get delivered in about two weeks. They were contracted back last winter. I haven't seen them up close for about 3 months since they went to grass. There is over 400 head total on 750 acres. My 24 head are out there with them. I drove by the other day and one was standing close to the fence. She has sure grown. It is going to be interesting to see how they weigh up.

Good cow price. So it is a good time to cull cows. :cowboy:

Friend asked if it is a good time to retain heifers... I said sure, but the best time is after the restaurants are full again. Anyone got a crystal ball on that? I am thinking 2023.

I'm getting where I like moving them out a lot earlier than I use to unless she is just a guaranteed heifer maker. It also helps to know you have a good flow of replacements coming in behind them.

You cant go wrong with those numbers, IMO.

Good time was 6 years ago... :) ...but who knew.

I sent a bunch I didn’t want my $$$ to get hung up in several months ago. Still looks like the right move except I had expected I might be able to replace some of them for quite a bit less than I can right now...maybe in several more months.

Brute....I’m kind of on the other end of that now. I’ve holding on to them longer. Instead of eyeballing the “back to the farm” market, I’m targeting the fat cow slaughter market. Guess I’m looking for cows in the age group you are getting rid of.
