I cannot find my original thread so I am going to start a new one here. This is the project I started with a local young lady who is just a superstar in my book. She bought a steer from me when I had my commercial cows and I was so impressed with her work ethic that I gave her a heifer to use for a project for the next 2 years.
At the end of the project she will get the first calf and I will get my (cow) back. Plus I help her with feed on an informal basis.
Anyway we weighed the calves today and here is the heifer. She turned 1 yr old today and weighed 920lbs and her Frame Score was between 5.5 to 6.

I am considering trying to get her to show the heifer at the Junior Gelbvieh show in Neb this summer in addition to the 4H and State GV show at the fair in Aug. I don't know enuf about showing to say one way or the other if she is qualified, but from a beef point of veiw I like the heifer a lot.

Under that somewhat crusty and tough exterior lies the heart of a marshmallow... and a very shrewd businessman and good friend if you're on his "right" side!

edit: and a DANG fine heifer too.. Nice, boxy, and deep

Looks like a good heifer, only thing i se that i would change are her legs
they seem skinny in comparison with her frame.
OTher than that she looks great.

yea gabby is right the legs don't fit her well...
and look like she has a good amount of lose skin on here neck.
but other wise real nice heifer and nice wide rump.

I imagine that if she had some Club calf genetics she would have more bone but she is GV/Angus and both of her parents have average bone so I am sure she will grow into it as she matures.

Her momma s not one of those GV cows that everyone thinks weighs 1500lbs, she is a very moderate framed 1100 to 1200lb cow.

She's got good body capacity, depth, thickness, and length. To be picky, she might be a touch heavy in the front and not have a lot of bone, but for a GV/Angus I would expect that. Some of that has to do with not being clipped up yet, getting stray hairs off always seems to help with that. Looks good!

Thank you and everyone else for your assesments. I agree on her bone but to me at least she is such an easy fleshing heifer that it seems to make her look a bit finer boned. I for one would rather have her look this way and be more feminine than heavier boned an looking masculine. Personally if I could i would give her a longer finer neck and maybe just a little less up front.

Time will tell for her, but what really matters for me is that Madelyne has a great experience with her and ends up with an outstanding calf. Right now I am looking for the perfect Balancer heifer bull to AI her to.

I agree all she needs is a little more neck extension and she would have looked like a champion. She will also look much better once she is bred and start showing signs of bagging.

I also think it's not helping her that Madelyne has her head jacked up so high. I know in this case it's to control her, but if she allowed her to lower her head I am sure her neck would look a lot better.

I forgot to post the one with the REAL mountains in the background. 14,000 ft Mt Princeton at the base are the Chalk Cliffs. I have 4 customers within a mile of the Chalk Cliffs with resorts, Christian Camps, or Hotels with Hot springs.

3way, nice country out there, I spent a few years in Co. Springs back in the 80's as a youngin. Seen it again in 2002, wow how things change. Never could get used to the climate, I dont kow how you fellows can live out there with no oxygen. I get winded just looking at those pics!

You oughta try being 60 and 30lbs overweight. I definately have to pace myself at least that's what I tell the wife,"I'm just pacin myself" . For what it's worth it's just as hard on me going down there the air feels like breathing soup, and I can't do the heat and humidity at all.

I like her depth and length, she has the feminine look to her and should make a good cow when her show days are over, with the right bull you can fill the few holes she has. Extend the neck, add a tick more bone and a little width and she would be tough to beet anywhere.
3way I know you hate the clubbies but if you hit her with I-80, or Dirty Hairy, for her first calf and then Hannibal, Grizzly, Willers Mitten Man or Mr. Clean for her second calf you would clean up that front end add a little bone, without giving up any maternal ability. All these bulls are clean of genetic defects and daughters make good cows and the steers will not be puds, you should get a well balanced calf, that will put on pounds and grow with the commercial steers.
It doesn’t hurt to dabble on the dark side as long as you can still see the light.

Thats the way the air is supposed to be, I get cold when the temps go below freezing....you know around 65-70F
