Drovers reporting 450 horses belonging to a former big time bull producer near Billings Mont. has been accused of starving his horses. Sheriff had to shoot 2 and vet said droves of them will die within next 2 wks. If you can't afford to feed them why not open the gate and at least give them a chance to survive? I would think a good stock horse would be worth a pretty good penny.

Chances are most of those 450 horses are just horses, broodmares and younger horses with no training....

From what i have read over on ranchers, its not near as bad as the media has it made out to be. Couple of horses were put down but for what reasons i don't no.
Hey roadapple why don't you open your gate for them. Just opening the gate is not going to solve the problems in the horse industry. Like vette said open the horse slaugther plants up agin and it will solve alot of the problems.

Reopening horse slaughter would end most of the "horse starving problems", you can't hardly give away a horse these days. $10,000 horses having become $1,000 horses. Also I do believe the media very likely has blown the issue way out of true reality.

From what I read it was 5 horses dead.
1 was old and 2 had broken legs and 1 had a band left on it's leg that crippled it and the last horse they have no idea.
No one knows the age's of the horses. Some are thin looking, but so is our 17 year old gelding who has hay in front of him and is out grazing.
Yeah re-opening the slaughter plants is a good idea.

I have been inquiring about what happened to them for over a year and never got any answers from anyone.
I can not imagine anyone who claimed to be a stockman letting animals suffer like this. but then a lot of folks who dealt with him got crapped on and don't have a good word to say.
But I honestly thought he cared about the horses. guess he fooled me too.

Leachman charged with animal cruelty
The Yellowstone County Attorney's Office on Friday filed five primary misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty and five alternative counts against James H. Leachman of Billings.
But the legal action may have come too late to save many of the estimated 450 horses starving to death on a ranch east of Billings.
Two horses were humanely shot by a county sheriff's lieutenant last Saturday. Unless the surviving horses are fed, Shepherd veterinarian Jeff Peila said the horses will start dying in droves within the next two weeks. It isn't clear who will feed the horses or if they can be adopted.
Leachman, who bred cattle in Montana for nearly four decades and turned to horses when his cattle empire collapsed, faces a total maximum of five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

Here's an update. Looks like the horses are going to get some help.
Hay is on the way to the hundreds of hungry horses on the former Leachman Cattle Co. Home Place ranch east of Billings.
In what has been dubbed Operation Home Place, Justin Mills, executive director of the Northern International Livestock Exposition in Billings, said Monday that a Red Lodge couple at the Valley M Ranch has donated 100 tons of hay to help the struggling horses. As soon as volunteers can find a semitrailer, probably Tuesday, the hay will be shipped to Billings.
"We'll get it right out there," Mills said. "If we can get some hay into those horses, everything will be fine."
That's because there's been a warm snap and the ice has melted, so the estimated 350 horses in one pasture now have water to drink, but they need to haul water tanks out to the ranch in case freezing temperatures return, he said.
Estimates run all the way from 300 to 400 horses to 700 head running on half-a-dozen ranches at the former Leachman Home Place ranch 16 miles east of Billings along Hwy. 87E.

“Do you understand when I go into a pasture and animals are not content — and I mean I'm talking about to a degree that 90 percent of the people can't even see it — If I think a group of cattle or bulls or horses are even discontent, I come unhitched and I want to solve it,” he said.
“They're barking up the wrong tree with the wrong guy,” Leachman said of rumors his horses were being neglected.

the media over dramatizing and blowing things out of proportion? that never happens. but it does sound like the guy "knows what's best". but just opening the gates is just as irresponsible, i don't care where you live.

In my post I said nothing about solving the horse problem. I know about the horse problem as I have horses but they're not starving. I was merely stating I thought it was more humane to turn them out, and give them a chance to survive, rather than stand by and watch them starve and suffer in the dead of winter. And RBB, my gate is open 24/7. 100 tons of hay will feed that many horses about 2 weeks , also they will more that hay to gain strength.

purchased 5 pairs last year for between 800 and 900. Sold the calves and mamas last week. Cows brought what i paid for the pairs. If i was worth a dang at speculatin i wouldve been over grazin last summer insead of hopin for rain.
