4 Acres of Nothing ?

I just bout 4 acres of land from my step dad for 1200 dollars and its good land on 1 acre a pond and a small horse barn sits on it and the other 3 is pasture he had 2 horses on it that he rode... I was wondering is there anything I could do on this land that would give me a feal for having livestock like can you use that to finish a few cattle on or what. This is land I can use asap to kinda mess with maybe this will give me a better outlook on the livestock side.. No Bee's either lol I dont wanna be stung :lol2:

P.S. Would this be better size land for a 1 goat or more , and can you get some of the same experances useing goats that can carry over to help with cattle ?

Is it fenced? You need a lot sturdier fence than what's used to keep horses. If you have to fence anyway, think about goats. If you want cattle get a pair or even two, but you'll have to feed in either case.

Yes its fenced and Barb wired 4 high with green metel or steal post..lol Really wanna go cattle, cause I dont know anything at all about goats..

Here's a suggestion; Maybe buy a couple bum calves, bottle feed them and raise them up to either sell or feed out for beef. Good way to get your hands in it and maybe earn a buck or two. That is if you get them cheap enough. Bums have been going a little high here.

1) With the few acres you have now, I would find out what the (AU) animal unit, is in your area.
2) Is there a water supply? If not plan on getting one set up.
3) Will you be buying or raising hay to feed in times of drought, snow or cold?
4) I would just start out with some spring weanling calves and put them out on the grass, check #1.
5) Working facilities, yes you will need them for present and future use. Plan wisely.

Now a bit of personal advice. You came on this board to ask for help, but did not get what you were probably looking for. The members of this board are straight forward and blunt people. They will tell it like it is and the way they see it.
Learn to roll with it. There is alot to know that can be learned here.

Yes your right I came on here asking for help ..Not to be harrased by others..I just want useful information that I can use to get the job done! And not discouragment or your dumb etc... Just HELP! and alot have been supportive and some havent but let me Personaly apologize to Bez+ I said a smart-a remark because I felt he was discourageing me from doing it but after reading it a few more times it came to me that it was good advice and I shot off at the mouth before I thought it through. So for that I am SORRY ! And that goes to all that may have been affended. And let me also say that if Bez+ is in Iraq. I too been there and its not a good place to be, and also that I appreciate what you do over there :) I myself was 31bravo Air Assault MP I done 2 tours 1st was In Baghdad Area where one of my first missions was an Air Assault on a building in down town baghdad took a bullet to the right ankle area severing my achilles tendon. Was out on medical leave for almost a yr on a boot and alot of meds..lol I finally got going again done my second tour in Fallujah where I was shot again this time just above my right knee I lost some muscle tissue but still going strong..Came back home but nothing is the same when you get back you try and fall back into everyday life but it never seems right. But finally got into the swing of things again and find myself happy again but feel like I could be happier if I tryed raising cattle so here I am in these forums trying to get some education cause clearly I have none when it comes to grammer..rofl But thanks Bez+ for the info as well as for all the others on here :) I say Hooah ! :tiphat:

since you are starting with 4acs weaned calves would be a good start.id buy 2 or 3 300lb weaned calves.take them to the vet give them shorts worm them cut an dehorn if needed.bring them home pen emm.get them on feed an get them used to you.then turn them out an let them graze.an feed them grain everyday.sale or butcher the calves in the fall.plant some rye grass or clover for winter pasture.then get more calves in feb gaze them.an feed some hay till spring.

I have no words of wisdom for you as I am just starting out to but I did want to good luck and I wish you the best. I know how hard it can be starting out. 1200 for 4 acres...wow, that is a deal. Where we are looking 4 acres costs 30k. Anyway, good luck! :)

When it comes to the ground you have there ( congrats on the steal by the way :lol: ) it is a matter of someone who knows what they are doing getting eyes on to let you know what it will support.

Thanks All this is helping out alot , My Step dad said he wouldnt recommend doing Goats because Cattle want graize in the same place goats did recently is that true I have never heard of it? But either Way will I have to water the cattle or is the pond sufficent enough , and can I raise the cattle in the Barn that the horses was in ?

My husband just got hit by a cow that just had a calf
He came home to get me and out we went, we got out there. I was to be the protector while he got the calf out of the snow bank and into the sleigh. I had two canes in my hand...wait for it


i got ploughed under today. The only thing that saved me was the foot of snow that i fell into and the cow fell on top of me after head butting me. I am lucky. I am black and blue but no broken bones. Cows or calves..300 # or over can be dangerous without proper handling facilities.
We ended up getting the tractor to plough to the calf, and putting the tractor over the calf to get the calf into the sleigh.

IF YOU WANT COWS MAYBE WORK WITH A FRIEND WHO HAS THEM AND GET TO KNOW THEM.
Just so you know, i'm no greenhorn around cows. Over a decade.

and bees don't sting...much.

My next door neighbor Jessie has a tractor and other equipment he has a few Angus cattle but I dont get to talk to him alot cause I work most the time , But the last time I did he told me if I wanted to get into it he would help me out he use to sell Hay to my dad real cheap for round bales he lives like a 100 yards away from us, We have a Barn with an open end on it for them to get up into and probaly could set a gate up on it to keep them in . The rest of the property is Barbwired 4 high Not strong enough for any cattle they said , I didnt get that part seeing how 2 horses in there they weight as much if not more then the cattle right ? But either way the Barn might be a good Ideal I will try and take Pictures of it, I am working on getting it cleaned out, Dad stuck alot of our old bikes and stuff in it when we was little and I have to get rid of a trailer that sites on the very back of the far east corner of the Land , Jessie said I could probaly sell it as scrap and get some one to pay me money and let them haul it off well see I guess :)

And also how long will Hay last in a Barn stored out of the Rain etc.. ? months , yrs ?

Rockridge is right. You need working corrals with an alleyway. Getting butted by any large animal is NOT fun. Had one of our cows try to take us tonight. Business end of a pitchfork always works for me.

I would put in a seperate water source then the pond. Reason why is animals will do their business in the pond. In doing so they can pass around some nasty stuff.

We have some grass hay that has been in our barn for around 10 years. We really filled it up. We used square bales.

Definately build a pen to place the cattle in when you first get them. Having a feed bunk is nice too.
