Anyone know what the idle speed of a 3020 gasser should be? I just picked up a late 70 one. Its the first gas tractor I've ever been around so I'm a little out of my element here. Just trying to go over it and get everything the way it should be. Also in the zenith carb it has what looks like a electronic fuel shut off solenoid or load control valve. The wire is unplugged so it obviously not doing anything, can this just be pulled and replaced with the old style load control valve?

Never fooled with a JD 3020 that was gas cant answer the question but anytime I had a question on my diesel 3020 I would go to the dealer and find the guy with the greyest hair or no hair and ask him :lol2: :lol2:

It may come to that, I have a feeling they will get tired of me real quick though haha. At the IH dealer it didnt take long for me to be known as "that guy with the 706"

First of all Im not familiar with this tractor , But I do know a little about gas engines. When I was cutting my teeth helping my mechanic great uncle , I recall on numerous occasions asking the owners on trucks, jeeps , cars about idle speed . It was tuned by ear to suit the driver. I still to this day adjust the idle down on anything I own that has that adjustment. I prefer it to be a low as it can be but still move in low gear without having to increase rpms .

I agree just like when shifting a vehicle your ears can tell you everything you need to know.

I do agree with that, It just sounds a little to fast for me and I wasnt sure if it was because I just dont know these gas motors or it was actually a little high.

Look in t electronic ignition if you haven't already.

That is on the list, along with new coil, plugs, and wires. Probably a carb rebuild just for piece of mind as well as new water pump and thermostat.

Had my 3020 Zennith carb rebuilt and rejetted by Roberts Carburetor out of Iowa last year. Wasn't cheap, but I'd sure do it again after seeing the results. They have a great website for parts and diagrams too. Pretty sure I'd be paying for training to have my local dealer try it...

I have been considering that, they are not to far from me and I've heard nothing but good things about them. Just this weekend I had a few new leaks pop up looks like i will be replacing a mid pto seal and hydraulic pump seal very soon. Still trying to find out if I can replace that electronic solenoid in the carb with a regular old style one but not to many people seem to know what I'm talking bout. There are a lot of 3020's around here but they are nearly all diesel when I mention gas 3020 most just tell me how bad of a tractor it is.

You can just get one for an older one and it will screw right in . I think those other ones are pretty expensive to replace.

It's not a bad tractor. Carburetor is the source of most problems people have with them followed by ignition issues. I agree Robert's will set it right and are what I would call carb specialists. Can't remember which one but some would replace the carb with a different one for better reliability. One of them had constant issues and that is where the bad name came from. Ignition is like anything with points they require a yearly tune up or maybe more if you use it a lot or in a humid environment. Really the carb is the only negative thing outside of being a little more thirsty. One plus is it will start easier in colder climates. Enjoy!
