We were cutting hay yesterday with the 1960 John Deere 3010
diesel tractor. It was running so smooth and all at once the engine lugs down, hard, and here comes the smoke! The engine shut down as he cuts her off. He said it was locked tight. :(

He thinks it is either the balancer or a bearing. I hope it's the balancer. But if it is a bearing, then the engine will have to come out.

I am afraid that it will be cheaper to buy another engine than to rebuild the one in it.

Anyone know where a D254 engine could be bought?
Doing a search for the engine only comes up with parts.

He has had that tractor for so long, it has become a family member.

Here's one. If the link works you can e-mail or call and get a price. From what I've seen on some other engines they have it'll be over 5 grand.

It doesn't look too good. I emailed Sikeston with the Worthington site, and asked if they had one there. The rebuilt one was $4500 stating it is retail. I wonder if they are like a lot of companies that list retail, but tell you they give better prices than others. I guess that would be considered a hopeful wish.

Looks like we need to get on the phone tomorrow and get some ideas instead of anticipating selling the farm for an engine. We will give both places a call tomorrow to see.

Park it in the barn and start jerking parts off. Find out what's wrong before jumping in with both feet.

Good advice! Might not even have to replace the crankshaft, just have it turned and new bearings.

Since when is dialing 1-800 jumping in with both feet? It will be at least two weeks before the motor can be looked at.
Going to work each day,(where I have plenty time to think about it) coming home and finishing the hay fields, tending the cattle, there won't be time to look at it.

Besides, I leave jerking the parts off to my wife. :D

if you can over haul the motor that would be cheaper.youve got a 95hp motor give or take.the motor i had replaced cost $7000 14yrs ago,
 
Have found over the years that sometimes it doesn't pay to spend the money to rebuild these old tractors.

Not saying you shouldn't, but if you rebuild the engine, you still have an old hydraulic system, trans, front end, etc.

When you rebuild an old tractor, you still have an old tractor.

Sometimes it works out good. Sometimes it doesn't.
